At Tennessee the sciences of biology, zoology, and microbiology were incorporated into the liberal arts so if one got a degree in one of those disciplines it was a liberal arts degree. The change was made to require students to take required liberal arts courses so the professors there could justify their jobs. I lack an English course and a year of Spanish to fulfill degrees in all three of these disciplines (I lived on the border for five years and spoke Tejana). Instead, I took courses that would augment my life's work in veterinary medicine. I refused to play the liberal arts department's game. It was ridiculous as one could get a liberal arts degree in microbiology with only 12 hours of micro. I had 75 hours in micro alone.

I was lucky enough to got to college in the 70s. I CLEP’d out of all my general ed requirements and could concentrate on science and math.
