Matt Mahan to Be Next Mayor of San Jose After Cindy Chavez Concedes in Contentious Race
CBS San Francisco ^ | NOVEMBER 16, 2022

San Jose City Councilmember Matt Mahan will become the next mayor of San Jose after Santa Clara County Supervisor Cindy Chavez conceded in the race, more than a week after Election Day.

Results from the Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters as of Wednesday morning showed 123,436 votes (51.32%) were for Mahan, and 117,085 (48.68%) for Chavez with 90% of the votes counted and Mahan's lead widening to 6,351 votes.

The processing and counting of hundreds of thousands of vote-by-mail ballots delayed the final outcome of the vote.

"I have called Matt Mahan to wish him the best of luck in his two-year term as mayor," Chavez said in a prepared statement. "San Jose faces numerous challenges in the months and years ahead, requiring that we all work collaboratively with the entire City Council to reach meaningful and equitable solutions."

The race between political newcomer Mahan and the longtime civic leader Chavez to replace outgoing Mayor Sam Liccardo was one of the most hotly contested local races this election cycle. Liccardo, who was unable to run for re-election due to term limits, had endorsed Mahan in the contest.

Housing and the homeless crisis as well as crime, public safety and police staffing were among the key campaign issues in the race.

While Mahan was endorsed by Liccardo, Chavez received the support of all of the other San Jose City Council members currently serving alongside Mahan.

Mahan is a former tech executive who was first elected to the San Jose City Council in 2020 to represent southeastern parts of the city.

Mahan and Chavez had advanced to the Nov. 8 runoff election after receiving the two highest vote totals in the June primary, which also included councilmembers Dev Davis and Raul Peralez and retired San Jose Police Officer James Spence.

Mahan is the more "conservative" of the two candidates. Chavez is tied to labor and previous mayors.

There was controversy in the campaign because some of Mahan's Vietnamese supporters called Chavez a communist. Mahan probably got a lot of the Vietnamese vote. He is currently Cicy Council member for the 10th district, which is the most conservative in San Jose. He says he wants to reform, but I'm not sure what his issues are.

By the way, Matt Mahan may be most famous because he went to Harvard, and during his freshman year he was roommates with another freshman who dropped out after that year: Mark Zuckerberg.

Face it. What you once knew is long gone. Doubt you would want to live or raise children in San Jose today.

I live in San Jose and this Mahan clown will be a continuation of the clown he’s replacing, Liccardo.

Thankfully, I plan on leaving this shit hole California by the end of 2023.

I know, that’s why I said back then.

I would have graduated from the same school, but one year ahead of Pat Tillman.

It’s good to have fond memories.

What RINOs? San Jose mayor is a nonpartisan race. can’t find any evidence of what party Mahan is registered for. I don’t see anywhere he claimed to be Republican. If you know something I don’t, let us know.

Sounds like you went to Leland High School.

We moved to Arkansas 2 1/2 years ago after living in Almaden Valley for over 30 years.

I’m glad we left, but I miss our home and what it was like raising our kids there.

The last 5 years it went down fast. I didn’t feel safe living there. Couldn’t walk on the trails by myself. Didn’t feel too safe going to the mall. Lots of scary homeless people.

Bought a house in Campbell in 1971.

I would have gone to Leland, but I moved away in 1985. (c/o 93)
Lucky for me I went to public school in Wilmington DE.
The retard’s wife taught 12th grade English at my high school while in 12th grade.

As for SJ, I lived near Almaden Valley Country Club.

Mahan is as conservative as SJ will ever get.

He’s almost normal, other then being a squish.

Coulda been Pancho Villa’s daughter.

Mahan was endorsed by Chuck Reed, who was somewhat better than the current clown Liccardo.

Wow. I went to John Muir and lived in Vista Park just north of Blossom Hill and Santa Teresa off of Pearl Ave before the 85 and 87 freeways went in, 73-75. We knew people down in Almaden Valley, way down at the end of Almaden Expwy. I’ve been back in the Bay Area for work and it’s completely built up down there now. Almost everything is unrecognizable.

Nobody’s ever called me Kevmo so I’m probably not who you’re looking for.
