The Ride of the Rohirrim
The Lord of the Rings ^ | 1944 | J.R.R. Tolkien

Posted on 11/21/2022 1:09:52 AM PST by quikstrike98

olkien made this narration before The Lord of the Rings had found a publisher. He was rather disillusioned, even despairing about it's prospects, and had lost faith in his ability as a writer. He was visiting the house of a friend, and this friend had bought a fairly newfangled device: a tape recorder. After messing with it a bit, recording The Lord's Prayer (to exorcise any evil spirits in it, for Tolkien was a bit suspicious of new tech), his friend suggested that he record his favourite passage from his new book. Tolkien did so, and on replaying it, the friend said, 'Surely you know that's really good?' Tolkien said, 'Yes... This machine has made me believe in it again.'

Arise, arise, Riders of Theoden!
Fell deeds awake: fire and slaughter!
Spear shall be shaken, shield shall be splintered!
A sword-day, a red day, ere the sun rises!
Ride now, ride now! Ride to Gondor!

Tolkien didn’t like allegory in any of his works, because he wanted them to be timeless, apart from any of this world’s present politics. But they did include a lot of analogy. Specifically, the Riders of Rohan represented what English culture would have been like had the Norman invasion never occurred. The Hobbits represented what English country life was like prior to industrialization. Their distrust of anything mechanical closely matched his own, since he also modelled them after himself.

And yet a bunch of hack libtard writers at Amazon thought they could “improve”

Compare and contrast ‘The Rings of Power’ at 60M per episode with ‘Andor’ at 20M per episode.

It’s an object lesson in the importance of having good writers.

Bad writing gets you tedious bags-of-suck like RoP, seasons 2+ of Galactica, the tail end of ‘Game of Thrones’ and so on.

Good writing gets you ‘Andor’, and of course LotR.

Not all freepers share the love of the works of the great Master of the English language - those semi-literates call Tolkien's master-work "a child's fantasy story":

ought-six [aka Sparky06, the little yap-mutt]: "Says the little kid whose screen name is that of some fictional character in a child’s fantasy story; and the ready employment of childish emojis reinforces that immaturity."

Here is my favorite passage from The Return Of The King [definitely NOT a "child's fantasy story"]:

And then wonder took him, and a great joy; and he cast his sword up in the sunlight and sang as he caught it. And all eyes followed his gaze, and behold! upon the foremost ship a great standard broke, and the wind displayed it as she turned towards the Harlond.

There flowered a White Tree, and that was for Gondor; but Seven Stars were about it, and a high crown above it, the signs of Elendil that no lord had borne for years beyond count. And the stars flamed in the sunlight, for they were wrought of gems by Arwen daughter of Elrond; and the crown was bright in the morning, for it was wrought of mithril and gold.

Thank you for posting this.

I have never heard Tolkien's rendition of this passage from The Return Of The King.

Now that he’s dead, Amazon and their liberal activist actors and producers thought Tolkien needed fixing, since he was clearly a racist in their opinions. I mean, he was a white guy who wrote about the culture he was familiar with. If he had written about any other culture that would have been cultural appropriation, which would have also made him a racist. The only thing that would not make him a racist is if he had written nothing at all.

the tail end of ‘Game of Thrones’ and so on.

I refuse to read the final book(s) in George RR Martin's A Song of Ice And Fire because the fat little puke allowed those hack TeeVee writers catch up with him and butcher the ending.

At least Diana Gabaldon [Outlander] isna going to let them do that to her.

All I know is that Tolkien’s tombstone reads “Beren”.

The grave of his wife next to him reads “Luthien Tenuviel”.

Liberals are nothing but a bunch entitlement minded, spoiled, whiny, crybabies for whom nothing is good enough.

They deserve to have their opinions ignored. Why validate their little temper tantrums?

Entitlement minded, and always looking for someone to blame. Always wanting to take their bony fingers and point it in someone’s face. If they must invent a reason for it, they will. They’re not the live and let live types, and the last thing they want is to be ignored.

Quikstrike98 is right.

For anyone who wants to know more about why Tolkien’s tombstone has those other names on it…….

Hello, you are right in all you say. As a young man I enlisted in the U.S. Army, and learned not only the phrase, but the etched on the soul principle, “No excuse, sir!” That’s a very good thing for a young man (or woman) to
learn. It makes, literally, a world of difference. As a society, we should teach that to ALL demand it of every citizen, and tolerate nothing less. But, alas...

One other lesson from Tolkien. If yours is NOT a society of WARRIORS, you will be conquered by one that is!

KEEP THE FAITH.

Definitely not a "child's fantasy story." Like many, I discovered The Hobbit in my middle school library, and enjoyed it immensely. But it took me until late in high school before I could get through -- and enjoy -- The Lord of the Rings. It's quite a journey, in many ways. Middle-earth is the only fantasy setting I've ever enjoyed, and it's because Tolkien's treatment of it was never childish.

I have watched all the Amazon Rings of Power episodes. Yeah, they missed badly if they thought they could improve on Tolkien. A series that at the least is uninspiring.
