Backers of Farmworker Visa Overhaul Make Year-End Push for Immigrant Labor Deal. Lawmakers and farm groups are trying to secure Senate approval before GOP takes over the House next year

WASHINGTON—Lawmakers, agriculture groups and farmworker organizations are pushing to pass an overhaul of the farmworker visa program through both chambers of Congress before the GOP takes control of the House next year.

A bill providing a path to citizenship for about one million farmworkers—and creating a capped number of new year-round visas—passed the House in March 2021, with the support of 217 Democrats and 30 Republicans.

The measure is generally supported by immigrant advocacy groups and by farmers who say they struggle to find enough people to harvest their crops. Republicans generally oppose efforts to provide legal status to people who immigrated to the U.S. illegally, though some have tentatively backed an exception for farmworkers, who work in a core business constituency.

“It’s almost impossible to ever get an American citizen to come work on a dairy farm,” said Steve Obert, executive director of Indiana Dairy Producers, a trade group. The work involves manual labor in “conditions some people would say are smelly and dirty,” he said.

Supporters are now looking to the Senate, where Sens. Michael Bennet (D., Colo.) and Mike Crapo (R., Idaho) are trying to reach an agreement they hope could secure the 60 votes needed to clear the chamber.

Time is ticking: If the legislation doesn’t pass this year, GOP leaders aren’t expected to be willing to bring it up once they have a majority in the House.

Currently there is no cap on the number of visas for seasonal agricultural work, known as H-2A visas, but farmworkers are only allowed to remain in the country for up to 10 months. That has created a problem for employers who need year-round help, such as on dairy farms.

That dairy farmer should look into a robotic milker, instead of ruining the nation with mass migration. Where’s Joe Bidens big incentive for that technology? Farmer I know who has one loves it.

If you read the H2A regs workers can stay a year at a time, not 10 mons and can be renewed 3 times
How can they lie about something so easily checked?
And there is no reasin to give citizenship.
We need to out pressure on the 30 Repubs

This makes no sense. Once a farmworker gets citizenship he will leave the farm and find something easier, maybe even the welfare route. Then the farmer will replace him with a fresh illegal, and the cycle repeats.

Get rid of welfare and unemployment benefits. Tons of young people sitting on their asses playing video games or streaming porn. We don’t need more immigrants, legal or illegal. In 50 years whites will be the minority and will be hunted down just like the whites in South Africa are.

What makes the WSJ think Republicans are against legal immigration? Farmworker visas are a tried and proven method to allow for crop pickers through legitimate means.

“In 50 years whites will be the minority and will be hunted down just like the whites in South Africa are.”

You can oppose illegal immigration without demonizing immigrants. Immigrants in general don’t hate whites. My parents are from India, as is my wife. We and our children don’t wish whites ill, and our kids have white friends.

Yep and each one will be allowed to bring in 90 of his closest family members straight into the country and straight onto the American welfare system.

The Deplorables want a Comprehensive Immigration Enforcement bill, missing since 1986 ONE TIME amnesty. Since that amnesty was granted already, a second amnesty is off the table. What remains is the enforcement the Democrats have disallowed since then.

The List of Comprehensive Immigration Enforcement, missing since 1986 goes like this -
1) southern barrier;
2) require eVerify to hire;
3) end all chain migration;
4) birthright per Minor v. Happersett (plural parents);
5) end work visas;
6) 40-year moratorium on all new applications for citizenship (to allow workplace automation effects on downsizing population);
7) Set up an illegal aliens’ victim restitution fund from tax on remittances. Use tax on remittances to replenish Social Security account.

Enactment of these provisions will motivate illegal aliens to SELF-deport, and remove colonizadors from our welfare rolls.

As far as a tax on remittances, at least a 85% tax on any cash transactions through Western Union (or like entities) going south of the border.

And it shouldn’t be just for paying back Social Security. These cockroaches clog our healthcare system, they mooch off of hard working taxpayers by using up welfare, food stamps, etc. They send their bastard children to our schools on OUR dime.

Maximum pressure should be placed on these cockroaches and their home country to make them self deport.
