I was under the impression that horses crossed over the Bering Land Bridge along with the early inhabitants of the Americas.

My understanding is that primitive horses and some other land mammals were hunted to extinction by the early inhabitants and runaway Spanish horses gave the Indians their mounts. Wikipedia even says that some horses native to the Americas went the other way over the land bridge, but this is the first I've heard of it.

The Indians hunted horses to extinction, when the Natives saw th Spanish RIDING their horses they were shocked. They were a food source, not a means of transportation.
