Supervisors in San Francisco voted Tuesday to give city police the ability to use potentially lethal, remote-controlled robots in emergency situations — following an emotionally charged debate that reflected divisions on the politically liberal board over support for law enforcement.
The vote was 8-3, with the majority agreeing to grant police the option despite strong objections from civil liberties and other police oversight groups. Opponents said the authority would lead to the further militarization of a police force already too aggressive with poor and minority communities.
Supervisor Connie Chan, a member of the committee that forwarded the proposal to the full board, said she understood concerns over use of force but that “according to state law, we are required to approve the use of these equipments. So here we are, and it’s definitely not a easy discussion.”
The San Francisco Police Department said it does not have pre-armed robots and has no plans to arm robots with guns. But the department could deploy robots equipped with explosive charges “to contact, incapacitate, or disorient violent, armed, or dangerous suspect” when lives are at stake, SFPD spokesperson Allison Maxie said in a statement. …

And more importantly, the robot will get home safely.
3 dirtbag deaths and $150 MM in settlement money later, they will move quickly to spend $30-$40MM MM on some robot social workers.
Yes. A good point.
I was speeding badly in the early am hours in Traverse City, MI a few months ago. I was late, had gotten lost, my phone went crazy on gps, and working at a dogshow. There was no traffic out there but me on a wide six lanes road.
I was pulled over by three police cars. The guy who came to the window had two cops backing him, one on each side, and the woman had her hand on her gun, still holstered but tightly grasped.
I looked at them and the first thing I said was “Wow, I am not going to hurt you”.
And it all ended well. In fact they forgave me and gave me directions. No ticket.
I told several people about it at the show and they thought the police were looking for someone that day.
But it really made me think about their daily activities.
Funny thing is, you can’t even get the actual cops to shoot
looters.
Who here actually thinks some robot is going to be given
the signal to kill a human?
Sorry, that’s too much of a stretch for me.
In 2016 police in Dallas used a robot to kill a suspect in the murder of 5 police officers. At that point, few people had even considered LE using robots to kill people. In reality, I suspect there are many police forces around the country with this capability. The problem is in how they use this technology, particularly as AI becomes more widespread.

The fraudulently elected supervisors that loved the idea and voted for this
madness, that’s who.

Fahrenheit 451.
There are lots of dystopian novels that deal with this concept, and none of them are scenarios I would want to live in.
I do, and it’ll be by the same kind of people who exonerated Michael Leroy Byrd for murdering Ashli Babbitt.
Who here actually thinks some robot is going to be given the signal to kill a human?
Another reason to stay out of SF, not that I needed another.
I’m guessing the robots wouldn’t autonomously shoot but rather a person would aim and fire the robot’s weapon.
So now I can have lethal, remote-controlled robots to defend my home. COOL !!
“The San Francisco Police Department said it does not have pre-armed robots and has ‘no plans to arm robots with guns’.”
Does anyone believe this crap?
No more than their story with respect to Paul Pelosi.
“You have 20 seconds to comply.”
ROBOCOP Also!
He won’t even give the order to humans.
Right now we allow riots, looting, arson, killings, walk-in
theft by the bag or cart full...
Nothing at all!
They aren’t planning on killing anyone unless it’s you and Me
over a text.
The last sentence.
