Climate change heats devil fish that possess St. Johns River

In another alarm of nature spiraling to hell in Florida, scientists suspect global warming has enabled devil fish to plague and ravage the St. Johns River.

This summer, a team of state water and wildlife experts with the help of a commercial fishing crew cast industrial nets in a Central Florida portion of the river several miles south of Cocoa called Lake Winder.

Of the estimated 40,000 pounds of many species hauled in for examination, only a small portion, less than 20 percent, was Floridian: bass, crappie, brim, catfish, bowfin and others.

The rest were exotics: a type from South America broadly known as armored catfish, some of which are known also as devil fish, and tilapia from Africa.

Scientists know that armored catfish tear up river bottoms for nesting and that tilapia consume aquatic plants – behaviors that may upset water quality and ecosystem balance.

“A bigger issue we suspect on why they are increasing over time is climate change,” said Erich Marzoff, the district’s director for water and land resources. “We just don’t have the frequency of hard freezes that we have had in past decades.”

The well documented rise in Florida temperatures has been particularly meaningful for the state’s warming winters, which has ushered a northern migration of aquatic plants, including mangroves, and fish, including snook, that aren’t particularly cold hardy.

“A bigger issue we suspect on why they are increasing over time is climate change,“

Stopped there.
If not for pesky racism and climate change the world would be perfect.

“A bigger issue we suspect on why they are increasing over time is climate change,”

Yes. That would explain the exploding populations of English sparrows and starlings, European and Asian carp, kudzu, and zebra mussels, to name a few.

Yes. Climate change……..

This is curious: If we have “climate change” and the earth is supposedly getting hotter, then how come the record high temperatures in every state were set decades ago, some well over 100 years ago? How is that possible if the earth is getting hotter?

the only temps that show rising are where concrete and air conditioner exhaust now affect the measurement devices.

--- "Is there anything climate change can't do?"

Yes. But thankfully we can trot out racism, toxic masculinity and, of course, MAGA, when climate change isn't quite opening up the purse strings. Best regards.

What a bunch of bunk. There have been Tilapia in Central Florida for at least 25 years. My friends live on a lake in Kissimee and have been bow hunting them forever.

I am sure they have an easy solution: the thermometers were not properly set in those years.

Climate is a stochastic mechanism in perpetual flux.
Flora and fauna have been in “battle” for dominance since they were around.
People traveling the globe and releasing non native flora and fauna is an issue.
What percentage of flora and fauna that have ever existed are gone?
People think we have control, and we don’t even understand the interplay of all occurrences on Earth.
That’s why our models are wrong over and over.
If we actually knew everything, there would only be one model.

Thanks for the last several entertaining minutes after a simple search -- not Google -- for the phrase. So much lunacy for the rubes.

I have become so-o-o anxious about the impending end of the world that last week I planted some new trees and shrubs in our garden, and today will plant 75 more daffodil bulbs for the spring which will never come. Oh the agony. Not.

Best wishes.

40,000 pounds of now dead fish. I thought everyone was starving and couldn’t afford the price of fish.
