A major push to replace America’s gasoline-powered cars with electric vehicles has not borne much fruit yet. According to a new study, America’s 2.1 million electric cars and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) have saved the country some gasoline.
A little.
A smidge.
In 2021, they saved almost two days’ worth of gasoline.
It’s a hard number to trim America uses a lot of gasoline. The numbers are staggering.
According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, Americans burned about 369 million gallons of gasoline per day in 2021. And that number was down a bit from historical highs. Many Americans drove fewer miles in 2021, amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
A study by the Department of Energy’s Argonne National Lab concludes that, over the course of a decade, privately owned PHEVs and EVs “saved about 690 million gallons of gasoline — about two days of consumption– and reduced CO2 emissions by 5.4 million metric tons.”
Last quarter, overall new car sales fell by 0.1%. But electric car sales surged by 67% compared to the same period in 2021.
So complaining that electric vehicles haven’t displaced much gas usage yet is a bit like complaining that the fire department hasn’t put out the fire when they’re still unfurling the hoses.
But, to date, the numbers are unimpressive. EVs reduced national gasoline consumption in 2021, Argonne says, by just 0.54%.

Ping.
Yea, team!
Useful article as it highlights just how huge the American energy budget is. The idea of replacing all fossil fuels is a total dystopian daydream.. And it doesn’t even begin to address the energy needs of heavy industry.
This entire EV crap is nothing more than a con to destroy our industrial nation and the Republic. We’re at war. A lot of people can’t see this.
the real purpose of the evs is to ban gas cars
gas cars will not be replaced by evs
it will be shut up and get on the bus
only the rich and powerful will be able to afford personal transportation
How much gas they saved is irrelevant.
How was the power to charge them generated?
The power plant doesn’t run for free, honey.
Were fewer fossil fuels burned to charge them than the equivalent amount in gasoline a similar vehicle would have consumed?
Here’s how much gas they have ‘saved’:
This much: ————> <————————..............
And the charged the batteries how? and with what energy source?
Think of all the jobs provided for African youts digging out those “conflict minerals” !!
What fuels are being used to create the electricity EV cars are using?
Electricity’s not pulled down from thin air.
Back in 2017 Musk claimed all the Superchargers were being converted to solar. Hasn’t happened.
Excellent presentation regarding the materials required here:
The quantity of metal required to make just one generation of renewable tech units to replace fossil fuels, is much larger than first thought.

They once again claimed that by the end of 2021, 100% of energy provided by superchargers would be renewable.
It didn’t happen.
Gas saved or energy saved? Might have saved some gasoline I guess, but they cost significantly more in energy, and that energy has to come from somewhere.
I saw one calculation that said it would take two football fields of solar panels to power a large Supercharger installation.
Well, you have to have a kite and a key. Duh!
People think that they will be driving around in electric vehicles in a few years that will have the same utility as their current gasoline powered vehicle. Only the privileged will have something that even approaches that pipe dream. The more affluent will be in glorified golf carts with a top speed of around 30 mph and a range of 30 miles if they are lucky. Most people will be using electric bicycles or “scooters” that you stand up on and can supplement your forward momentum with a kick on the pavement with your foot.
Even the increased demand on electricity from that will challenge our already hobbled power grid. This is all a joke.
but 50% of the EV is made from Oil
