This whole thing is so much crap.
For one, despite quite a few disagreements I would have with Bolty-boy, on this one (the major point) he is correct. As is Trump. The only way Bout should have ever been returned is as a smear on a Kremlin wall. Preferably the West wall.
For another, a simple lowball estimate of criminality rates and a bit of math would indicate that there are plenty of Russians in US jails, for one thing or another. Unquestionably there’d surely be 100 minimum involved in industrial and other espionage. Pick out 5 of the espionage group, and, oh, another dozen or so other felons, and very loudly / publicly offer to trade them for Whelan. Offer up another 10 felons for Griner. We’ll see if Pooty is serious...
Bout must be very valuable to Russia. First, they imprisoned Whelan on false charges to offer him for Bout. When Trump turned down their offer, they imprisoned a woman more sympathetic to Democrats. They knew Democrats would put the pressure on a Democrat president to bring her home.
Now, Russia has its man back.
