DETROIT – Stellantis said Friday that it plans to indefinitely idle a Jeep plant in Illinois, starting early next year, to cut costs as it invests in electric vehicles.

The transatlantic automaker, formerly known as Fiat Chrysler, said the plant will cease production as of Feb. 28. The more than 1,200 workers at the facility, which produces Jeep Cherokee SUVs, will be placed on indefinite layoffs, the company said.

“Our industry has been adversely affected by a multitude of factors like the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the global microchip shortage, but the most impactful challenge is the increasing cost related to the electrification of the automotive market,” Stellantis said in an emailed statement.

I wonder if they have eyes on being the military EV vehicle manufacturer?

Not too far into the future the cars on the streets in America will look like they are from Cuba. I refuse to spend a single dime on woke EV’s being sold using a big lie. I won’t be a part of that. I am not going to contribute to the downfall of America.

94 Cherokee country 6 cyl 4.0 for me

I bought it 4 years ago with 230,000 and my smog numbers were still almost zero and compression very good.

put a starter and radiator and top end and front end on it for the heck of it.

It will be running after those ev have had to replace 4 batteries.

I will laugh

as I blast my heater in the winter and my a.c. in the summer

as I pass the rubes waiting at the ev charging stations that haven’t caught fire yet.

I could never understand how a company could cut costs by laying off productive workers when the company was making a profit.

I’m with you and that’s why I’m restoring a 44 Willys MB. It’ll fit in nicely with my 68 Corvette and 79 C10. They can stuff their electric vehicles.

““sabot” was a derogatory name for those workers.”

Hence sabboted .50 slugs in 12 ga. rounds?

“I could never understand how a company could cut costs by laying off productive workers when the company was making a profit.”

See Ford laying off [almost] all of their gas engine vehicle engineers this year.

I haven’t been to an auction for a while … since pre-COVID, but I am hoping to find something unique and to my tastes for my next vehicle. Being retired, I don’t drive a lot. That opens a lot of options.

With all the electric cars on the road now they have saved almost 3 days worth of usage in the USA> Betting they are not counting the mining costs.

After Christmas I hope to finally hit my 65 Willys jeep hard assuming I don’t have a major medical blowout like last year.

I have a body tub coming next week.

More stuff to do though.

Stellantis shows how stupid they are with this move. EVs are, IMHO, about 10 years ahead of their time. The battery technology just isn't there yet, but it's getting better all the time.

Well, our lords and masters have extended the subsidy until the 2030s and have increased the amount of money set aside for building charging stations, apparently.

And now GM is going to build a network of charging stations. Wonder who is paying for that.

When American carmakers started in with this EV crap I told the lovely Mrs. Maximus we should buy and store a couple of ICE vehicles, and adopt a Cuban mechanic. (I wish we had done so while interest rates were low....)

“Looks like Jeep is going woke. I like my gasoline powered Grand Cherokee.”

That window licking, affirmative action hire Mary Barra @ GM said they’ll be full electric by 2035 while I predict that they will be bankrupt and out of business by 2036.

I’ll keep my 3.0L DURAMAX Silverado 1500 4X4 with it’s 650+ mile range any day over an EV.
