Stellantis is closing its assembly plant in Belvidere, Illinois, in February 2023.
The Illinois plant employs about 1,350 workers, who are expected to be laid off.
Stellantis cited the rising costs of electric vehicle production for the closure.
The company said the replacement of the Jeep Cherokee SUV, along with other vehicles on a new electrified platform, will be produced in Toluca, Mexico.
Stellantis has said it will invest over $31.6 billion through 2025 on electrifying its vehicle lineup.
It also has said it expects EVs to make up 100 percent of its sales in Europe and 50 percent in the United States by 2030.

Our political elites live in mansions with security. The old photo of JP Morgan standing next to a beautiful fireplace spewing platitudes about the wealthy says it all. The rest of us are simply insects to our political elites.
In 2014 I wanted to replace my 8 year old daily driver. Used car prices were unreasonable so I looked at new. My priorities were an American company, built in America. I bought a new Jeep Patriot (Chrysler) built at this plant with engine and transmission coming from Detroit.
Now Jeep is foreign owned, and built in foreign countries.
1,350 people at an average guesstimate of $80K/year is $108,000,000/year taken out of the local economy. Yes, many will likely find new jobs over time, but a lot of families are about to be hurting. The mortgage is due on the first...
I know most cars have parts from all over the world, but it means something to me that my F150 is assembled in the USA. Stellantis can do whatever it must do to remain profitable, this is probably a good business decision. But taking jobs out of the USA doesn’t sit well with me, and they can count on me to never buy their product.
You have a good point. At least it’s put together here. It was speculated that Nissan’s newly redesigned PRO 4X had some commonality or possibly Jeep design features incorporated. I have one which I love. - it feels to me like a truck cab on a skate board;) Too smooth for a 4-wheeler on the street - sweet.
I expect they can partially thank their UAW union for this closure.
They won't. They'll probably fall in line when the UAW finds a way to blame Trump.
High cost of crap that no one wants except a few Climate Cult members and they probably don’t drive EVs
And let’s see how a Mexican-built electric Jeep handles American four wheeling. They might as well file bankruptcy now.

Watched a YouTube video recently on the Ford F-150 Lightning electric truck. The reviewer / car guy was appalled by how the actual milage was basically cut in half once the temperature fell into the mid 30’s. He got about 65 miles of range before the battery reached a low-battery status.

The good people of Belvedere will be the ones to suffer..
“Engineers should build a car like the ones in the good old days without the bells and whistles. I’d buy one.”
Still driving my 1995 Wrangler, and whenever someone younger than about 50 rides along, they often remark about the wind-up windows. They’re still working, unlike any electric window of the period.
It’s a shame they don’t make Jeeps like this anymore. There’s certainly a market, considering the offers I get.
McConnell lets this crap roll through congress.
$$$$$$$$$$
So true.
Capitalism is a wonderful system, that is if the capitalists are nationalists first. If they are internationalists they will always send the production to the lowest labor source…ie third world countries.
For 35 rand it would give the F150 a run for its money. For 135 grand, not so much.
This wouldn’t be happening under President Trump.
“Building Back Better” in Mehico.
Mosr Democrat voters aren’t too informed.
They voted for this, let them live with it.
They’ll be building the new Yeep Burrito SUV.
