Peru’s new government declares police state amid protests

LIMA, Peru (AP) — Peru’s new government imposed a police state Wednesday in response to violent protests following the ouster of President Pedro Castillo. The 30-day national emergency declaration suspends the rights of “personal security and freedom” across the Andean nation.

Acts of vandalism, violence and highway blockades “require a forceful and authoritative response from the government,” Defense Minister Luis Otarola Peñaranda announced.

The declaration suspends the rights of assembly and freedom of movement and empowers the police, supported by Peru’s military, to search people’s homes without permission or judicial order. Otarola said it has not determined whether a curfew will be imposed. He estimated the total number of people “causing this disturbance” at no more than 8,000 nationwide.

The defense minister said the declaration was agreed to by the council of ministers. It didn’t mention Peru’s new president, Dina Boluarte, who was sworn in by Congress hours after lawmakers ousted Castillo.

Boluarte pleaded for calm as demonstrations continue against her and the Congress that ousted her predecessor.

“Peru cannot overflow with blood,” she said earlier Wednesday. Answering demands for immediate elections, she suggested they could be held a year from now, four months before her earlier proposal, which placated no one.

For any who know: Isn't this the new government who stopped the prior President from trying to rewrite the constitution and make himself maximum ruler and now wants asylum in Mexico?

You know if AP is calling it a “police state” that means the good guys are doing what is necessary to stop the leftist vermin.

Notice China, Iran, etc. are never referred to thusly.

President Pedro Castillo sought to dissolve Congress, prompting his removal from office by lawmakers and his arrest shortly thereafter.

He, Pedro Castillo, was a Marxist BTW.

Yes.
I have spent some time in Peru and the locals refer to “the season of strikes”

One morning, during the “season”, I BARELY made it out of Country. They closed the airport 30 min after I arrived in the terminal.

Arequipa, IIRC.

Okay, because when I tried to translate the statement it said something about the Station of strikes, which made no sense st all, but figured it had to be something about strikes. Thanks for translating. 🙂

I'll bet there are some very pretty areas down there. Did you visit any Inca places? Perhaps that is why you were down there? 🙂

My visiting there has been via the boobtube only. 🙂

Castillo was truly, legally impeached and removed from office.
Not only the whole opposition, but even some of his own party voted for the removal and he was replaced with his own vice-president, the member of his own party.
For corruption and for being Marxists and coming with Marxist laws and regulations.
Removing president is easier in Peru than in the USA, two others were removed in recent history, but the vote was 100% legal.
These protester are sore losers, shouting Marxists slogans.

No.

I never had an opportunity to go to Machu Picchu.

I’ve only been there “virtually” also.

Hopefully, some day.

Interesting that civilizations like the Incas existed in several places around the globe, and that all seemed to build pyramids of similar nature, but of the step nature rather than with smooth sides. I believe that style only showed up in Egypt.

While I do not believe in aliens from outer space, I do believe the human species existence has been one of ebb & rise due to natural catastrophes that adversely affected the planet along with mankind in the process.

I mean when you look at places like Hadrian's villa built around 120 AD, humans were a very advanced species even then. Which predates the Incas by about 1,200 years. Most people today are probably are unaware of what the capabilities humans were capable of almost 2,000 years ago, and evidence shows that their abilities extended back even further. Greek architecture goes back 500 years before Christ was born. They built elegant structures, and remnants of them still exist for us to marvel over to this day. It could well have occurred way before that but the evidence of them have finally succumbed to the elements of nature.

I'm just glad we have the ability to be able to take virtual tours. Not sure I could get around them now anyway.

Perhaps some day we will learn the truth huh. 🙂
