I never had one, but a friend and my husband each did recently for surgery and the swab was anterior nostril only.
Some institutions, such as UW-Madison were using saliva tests in 2021.
I have personal reservations about all the swabs, but the sinus swabs were actually physically risky, especially in the hands of hurriedly-trained non-EENT professionals. The end point is an area of endangerment, as it reaches a thin bone plate with openings for nerves that is between the sinus & the brain.
