He was recruited into Munzenberg’s operation and other Soviet front groups like the Society of the Friends of New Russia after he got involved in World War I antiwar activism through contacts like Romain Rolland. He let Soviet intelligence use his apartment in Germany as a mail drop. He also belonged to a front group of scientists which included atomic spy Klaus Fuchs.
