How you paid for that rich person's beachfront house

A $5.5 million waterfront home in Darien, Connecticut, with five bedrooms and a swimming pool seems an unlikely recipient of your tax dollars, but it is. The owners applied for and received a $150,000 grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development years after they paid for repairs in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.

The Darien home is just one among thousands owned by wealthy people with expensive waterfront properties subsidized by you, the taxpayer.

These proprietors are not committing fraud. They are merely taking advantage of programs Congress authorized and federal agencies tweaked to deliver federal largess to people who vote for Democrats.

HUD’s Community Development Block Grant disaster recovery program was for years largely limited to low- and middle-income people. But after Sandy, the Obama administration changed two rules that turned the program into a spigot of cash for coastal elites.

As Thomas Frank has reported, HUD lowered the percentage of money that must go to moderate- and low-income households from 70% to 50%. It also allowed people to apply for reimbursement after repairs were already done. Before this change, few wealthy people would wait around for HUD to approve a grant before fixing their homes. Now they can fix it fast and apply for a taxpayer bailout later. More than $15 billion has flown through the program since Sandy.

The Community Development Block Grant Program is not the only way wealthy people on the coasts are enriched by taxpayers. Frank also reported that the Federal Emergency Management Agency gives wealthy homeowners billions of dollars to elevate their waterfront properties. A typical homeowner can receive up to $550,000 from taxpayers to lift their luxury home from the ground to protect it from flood damage.

Well, to be fair, people like the owner of that house are the ones who actually paid the taxes in the first place, so not sure how this is supposed to be terribly unfair.

Thanks for letting me know that although I’ve never owned a home myself, and at the age of 75, I never will, I’ve managed to help rich people get their piece of the pie.

You forget we spend the last 40 years lowering the rich peoples taxes and now they vote Democrat especially in Connecticut. They are just like the poor who don’t pay taxes and now want government largesse.

The rich people vote for the Democrats on the condition that the Democrats don’t mess with them personally. They have mastered the existing system and are making lots of money, but if the Democrats threatened their cushy lives they would vote GOP in a heartbeat.

People vote for the candidate who brings home the pork. That’s why Manchin wins in West Virginia even though it’s a fairly deep Red state. Why? He brings home the pork, like Sheets did.

A lot of people don't understand this. They question why the really rich like Bezos and Gates vote for democrats. The reason is because they're not affected by democrat tax policies, they're the donors to democratic coffers and in return the tax laws get written to benefit them. Paying taxes is for the middle and upper middle class, the people who typically vote republican. The truly rich get the laws written for their benefit so democrats are their biggest allies.

A good example of how this works is where Biden is vacationing right now. He's in the Virgin Islands staying at the home of Bill and Connie Neville who are billionaire democratic donors. Bill made his billions through a software company. They didn't just offer up their home because of the Biden's sunny disposition and wanting to be regaled with stories of Hunter's crack benders and stripper parties. You can bet that the dems aren't targeting Mr. Neville for more taxes.

This is what taxation does from top to bottom.
Fund a program.
Pay for it with taxes.
Siphon off money to buy influence and votes.
Give plum jobs running the program to politicians’ relatives, friends and donors.

Regular citizens are no longer represented in DC, it is only the Deepers and the Doners.

printed, fiat, manipulated money, courtesy of the Federal Reserve, and the massive Fed.gov debt it enables - always will go to government and its cronies first.

This simple fact has been known for 300 years.

Like Obama and Moochelle, the hypocrites spend a lot of time lecturing us on how the warming earth will soon bring tidal waves from melting polar ice, causing any shoreline properties to be underwater like Atlantis. Followed by building multimillion dollar mansions near the shore. Go figure.

photo of eminent world leaders and mansion....

Gore: Boy, did you get all the water spots off my limo this time when you polished it? I’ve told you so many times now. Seems you could learn a simple thing like that.

Obama: Al, don’t you recognize me?
Gore: Oops. You look like the servants and I get confused. Sorry, pal.

Yup—watch what they do, ignore what they say.

When they start selling those beach properties for pennies on the dollar they will get my attention...until then, I ignore them.
