Gov.-elect Josh Shapiro will be sworn-in next week on three Bibles with significance to his family and Jewish faith.
Shapiro, Pennsylvania’s outgoing attorney general, will use a family Bible that he has used for swearing-in ceremonies since 2005, a Hebrew Bible that was in the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh during the 2018 massacre, and a Bible carried by a Jewish soldier from Philadelphia during the D-Day invasion in World War II. Shapiro, who embraced his deep Jewish faith on the campaign trail, will be the third Jewish governor in Pennsylvania history after Milton Shapp and Ed Rendell.
Rabbi Jeffrey Myers, the spiritual leader at Tree of Life synagogue who survived the attack, told Jewish Insider that the Hebrew Bible was used in Shabbat morning services and would have been on Oct. 27, 2018, the date of the massacre.
“The Bible survived without any damage and Tree of Life is honored by its presence at the inauguration,” Myers said.
The attack on Tree of Life was the deadliest incident of anti-Semitic violence in the nation’s history, claiming 11 lives and wounding six others.
A Bible carried by Herman Hershman, a Bronze Star and Purple Heart recipient who landed on Omaha Beach with the First Division on June 6, 1944, will also be used by Shapiro, who attends the same synagogue, Beth Sholom Congregation, that Hershman did.
Hershman’s Bible is on loan from the Weitzman National Museum of American Jewish History in Philadelphia.
Jewish Insider reported that Hershman was 88 when he died in 2013.
Shapiro’s spokesperson told Jewish Insider that Shapiro’s family Bible was first used after he was elected to the state Legislature in 2004.

The number of bibles he puts his hand on doesn’t change the fact he’s a statist piece of s***.
He should be sworn in at Katz’s deli over a pastrami on rye.
Mr. Shapiro says he has a deep faith. He is also very pro-abortion.
The two are mutually exclusive. It’s a real shame folks like Shapiro can’t see that.
He can’t hold the beliefs he has and believe in god. Atheist JINO rat.
Maybe it’s me, but I thought the Bible was the Old and New Testament....Proclaiming Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.
The books are old but the pages within are untouched.
That would be incorrect.
There are several meanings, even amongst Nazarenes. For example, a lot of Protestants omit a number of books.
Swearing on a Bible is just show for baby-killers. The Word of God means nothing to them.

Shapiro is as Jewish as the Israelites that built the Golden Calf and had to be destroyed by Moses.
Shapiro does not worship the God of Abraham, he worships himself and Baal.
