Kyiv Denies Fall of Soledar Amid Fresh Russian Strikes on Ukrainian Cities
AFP via The Moscow Times ^ | Jan. 14, 2023

Ukraine reported a fresh wave of attacks on key infrastructure facilities on Saturday, a day after Russia claimed to have captured the ravaged eastern town of Soledar following a long battle.

Victory in Soledar would be a rare achievement for Moscow after an embarrassing series of military setbacks — although Kyiv insisted fighting was still ongoing in the city on Saturday.

Ukrainian infrastructure once again came under fire on Saturday as winter deepened, officials said.

"Today, the enemy fired at energy facilities again," energy company Ukrenergo said, adding that it was working on "eliminating the consequences" of the strikes.

In Kyiv, Ukrainian officials reported strikes on a power facility and a fire broke out in a warehouse after fragments of a rocket fell, though there were no casualties reported.

In the northeastern Kharkiv region, "the enemy launched another missile attack on critical infrastructure and industrial facilities," governor Oleg Synegubov said.

There could be emergency power cuts in the city of Kharkiv, the second largest in Ukraine, and in the surrounding region, Synegubov warned.

Russian attacks killed three people on Friday, the deputy head of the presidential administration Kyrylo Tymoshenko said.

The fate of Soledar, a salt mining town in the Donetsk region that Russia finally claimed to have captured on Friday, remains unclear, after regional governor Pavlo Kyrylenko told Ukrainian television that Ukrainian forces still "controlled" the town on Saturday.

Kyrylenko conceded that the "battles continue in and outside of the town" and described the months-long fight for control of Soledar and nearby Bakhmut as the "hottest" spots on the frontline.

Both sides have conceded heavy losses in the battle for the town, with Moscow desperate to sell any win back home after repeated humiliations and Ukraine determined to hold — and win back — ground.

On an icy road near Soledar on Saturday, AFP journalists saw Ukrainian medics tending to the wounded brought from the nearby frontline. Bloodied helmets, bullet-proof vests and pieces of uniform were discarded on the side of the road after being cut from corpses.

The health workers were "here to help the living", said a 31-year-old medic who identified himself as Vadim. Two men, one with a bandaged head, and another with an injured leg and carried on a stretcher, were quickly helped into a waiting ambulance.

The wounded were usually taken to stabilization points before being transferred to hospital, Vadim explained.

Another medic bent over one of the wounded men's vest, collecting the remaining bullets.

"Things are consistently difficult," said Vadim, but "the Ukrainians are keeping their positions."

It seems that the Russian claim of the capture of Soledar was just as unfounded as their previous multiple claims of the capture of Bakhmut.

excerpted from moonofalabama post:

“..Soledar direction situation as of 13.00 January 13

In the Soledar sector, the assault detachments of the PMC “Wagner” are clearing the quarters and underground communications on the western outskirts of Soledar. Today, Wagner entered the territory of the urban-type settlement of Sol and established control over the depot of the railway station of the same name.

▪️In the north-west of Soledar, active battles are taking place on the southern outskirts of Krasnaya Gora and in Paraskovievka near the Bakhmutka River. After the liberation of the railway station Sol, the village of Blagodatnoye was actually cut off from the supply lines from Seversk and Artemovsk (Bakhmut).

▪️The surviving members of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in Soledar and its environs are spreading information about huge losses in manpower due to command errors. In one of the brigades in the company of the formation, only 30 people remained, and in the battalion of 24 OMBR out of 300, only 100 fighters survived.

Fighting continues in Artemovsk (Bakhmut) and its suburbs. After the liberation of Opytnoe by PMC Wagner, position of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the city is deteriorating....”

Sure. That is if one is stupid enough to believe the Ukrainians or the Biden regime.

But, since they are so desperate to keep Soledar and Bakhmat, it is conclusively proof that when those cities DO fall under Russia control, it will be devastating to the Ukrainian war efforts. So, any spin that comes out otherwise, will be utter bulls#t.

And, the Ukrainians aren't even facing the Russian military in Soledar and Bakhmat. They are losing, on the ground, to the Wagner group.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov praised the "selfless and courageous action" of Russian troops, which he said is helping them to press forward in Soledar.

"Gigantic work has been done in Soledar," he said.

Peskov, however, stopped short of confirming a claim by Wagner Group owner Yevgeny Prigozhin, who boasted about capturing Soledar on Wednesday.

"There is still a lot to be done and it's too early to stop and rub our hands, the main work is still ahead," he said in a conference call with reporters.

Do you really expect open ground being Soledar and Bakhmut? The Ukrainians have had months to prepare secondary defensive positions.

That is an interesting spin you have about the Wagner Group. They are fully equipped and supplied by the Russian military and recruited from inside Russia. They are just as much part of the Russian military as the Waffen SS was part of the Nazi German military.

Sure. That is if one is stupid enough to believe the Ukrainians or the Biden regime.

The way it really is, is anyone who believes the Ukrainians AND/OR the Russians are even more stupid.

This war is a bloody, horrific stalemate, and both sides are bleeding over things that don't have to happen. The Russians have proven their military to be inept, corrupt and completely undeserving of the crown of "World's second fearsome military" that almost every historian called them before February.

Ukraine, on the other hand, is draining our own US Treasury and their own people's lives in the stubborn obstinacy to just let the Donbass go.

The Donbass people, some claim, want to belong to Russia.

Fine, then stop the fighting, remove troops, set up a peacekeeping force (India's army, trusted by both Russia and the USA) and have the UN (not Russia, LOL) conduct a referendum. Ukraine and Russia would have to abide by it.

You may call it stupid, but this is a positive way to end the bloodshed--except for Ukrainians who want all "their" land back, and Russians who really want to completely swallow the Ukraine.

As the Rolling Stones once sang, "You can't always get what you want, but sometimes, you get what you need."

Moscow times is always good for a laugh!
Soledar is about 80-90% captured..
.
Much of Ukraine is without power yet again.
Guess them Ruskies aren’t out of missiles yet?
this from CNN
Damage to power infrastructure from a wave of Russian missile strikes has led to emergency power outages in most regions across Ukraine, Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko said.

“Today, the enemy attacked the country’s power generation facilities and power grids again,” Halushchenko said on Facebook. “There are attacks in Kharkiv, Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, Zaporizhzhia, Vinnytsia and Kyiv regions.”
“The next days will be difficult. Power engineers are already working to restore electricity supply.”

You think Russia wants to invade nations in Eastern Europe and take them over against their will?

Why would he want to fight a series of bloody wars when Russia already has a declining population? Why would anyone think younger Russians, who are already complaining about mandatory military service, tolerate that? Why would he risk doing that and losing the ability to sell oil to Germany through the Nord 2 pipeline.

These kind of comments are ignorant. It’s 2022, not 1982.

There may be some diversionary raids, but it’s understood that the most likely axis of advance is near the Polish border, south to Lutsk and then potentially to Lvov….. …..cutting off the main supply lines into the Ukraine….. …..without which all organized resistance by Ukrainian forces employing large modern weapons, would cease totally in as little as six weeks.

Maybe, but ask yourself whether the current “Bleeding” could be worse or better than 1858 Kansas.

I tend to think stopping the presently going on war would be beneficial to both sides’ peoples. Maybe not the people behind Kremlin or Keivan walls, or in Wash DC, London, Theran and Beijing, the WEF clubhouse or Davos, but for the people who actually are bleeding, a resounding “Yes!”
