From what I have read, the tanks they COULD be sent are old ones without advanced armor and currently they need to be rebuilt with non-classified systems in them.

All tanks since 1988 have classified armor. There are no companies qualified to remove it; it would take 64 months to get one company up to speed on removing DU(depleted uranium)/ceramic armor - health and safety issues would extent that period. Older US M1s cannot be exported.

Recently I came across a website that indicated Elon Musk had previously stated that tanks are now obsolete.

I tend to agree with that statement given the offensive and defensive weapons used against tanks that are shoulder fire. A lumbering target made of steel that several shoulder fired weapons can take them out in seconds, that spells obsolescence to me.

Your post is unintentionally too clever by half. I’m almost certain that re-arming Ukraine with nukes of some fashion is indeed being planned. Non-proliferation treaties be damned. This to replace the Soviet era nukes they gave up in exchange for Western guarantees of their territorial integrity and sovereignty being protected on the future. They do have a point about that whether our Senate ratified anything or not. (We didnt)
Jets and longer range missiles are certainly coming to them soon.
Some people on high over here are being squeeze compromised that Ukraine must not fall ever or they are toast too. Things are yet to get ever more interesting and dangerous.
