A quarter of GOP say they'd back Trump as independent in 2024, threatening to split vote: Poll

More than a quarter of Republican voters say they’d back former President Donald Trump in the 2024 election even if he runs as a third-party candidate — possibly threatening to split the GOP electorate as the party seeks to win back the White House.

As the 2024 primary field begins to take shape, a majority of Republican voters are seeking to move past Trump and elevate another candidate as their party’s nominee. However, nearly 30% of “Always Trumpers” may be standing in their way, according to a new poll from the Bulwark.

“A large majority of GOP voters is ready to move on from Donald Trump. But a devoted minority might not let them,” said Sarah Longwell, who conducted the poll. “This is the 'Always Trump' faction of the Republican party. And they are why the GOP could be sleepwalking into another Donald Trump catastrophe.”

In a series of hypothetical matchups between Trump and other potential Republican candidates, polling shows the former president is fading with GOP voters at large. In a crowded primary field between Trump and nine of the party’s top contenders, the former president garnered roughly 28% of the vote — coming in below Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who clinched 39%, according to the poll.

That’s a problem because there are a lot of Republicans in DC who would prefer to lose the WH than to have PDJT back in it.

I’ll vote for Trump if he wins the primary even though I have my doubts about his chances in the general. But if he loses the primary he needs to step aside. Not doing so would prove he’s in it for himself.

Yes I will write him in if he’ not allowed to run as the Republican nominee.

Yup. A small percentage of conservatives will toss the election if they don’t get what they want and not afraid to admit it.

I have to admit that I am not so keen on DJT as I used to be. He just won’t stop pushing the Pfizer vax no matter how useless it is.

Whoever wins the primary, runs. Period. We don’t have a coronation here. One group seems to be a group of spoiled brats.

He can push the vacs all he wants, just don’t take it. His accomplishments far, far outweigh this stupid vaccine thing.

I don’t think Trump would run a campaign if he knew he was going to lose - but his lack of support for the eventual candidate would equally spell doom for Republicans.

Republicans need to play nice with each other.

I’ll vote for Trump or DeSantis. If they run a leftist (Bush, Romney, etc.) I’ll vote 3rd party or write someone in.

Yep, and at that time people can decide how they will vote for President in the general election. If a Romney were to win, I'd do a write in.

I wonder where Indys like me stand on this one.

Way too early for me to make any decisions. Have to see who is the nominated R first.

Mitch would be so relieved. Then he wouldn’t have to wake up in a cold sweat worrying that a Republican could win the presidency. His worst nightmare. Goes for the whole swamp.

Exectly. His position on the vaccine is meaningless. And he’s not going to mandate it.
