If I have my history right, Moldova was a part of Romania that the USSR took after World War II. When USSR broke up, Moldova became one of the new independent nations. But a part of it, Transdniestria, populated by many Russians broke away from Moldova. So far only one nation, Russia, recognizes Transdniestrian ‘independence’.
Moldova might want to rejoin Romania, but Russia says this would be a terrible provocation and might lead to Russian invasion since Romania is a part of NATO
Does any of this sound familiar?
I’m half Romanian and half Scottish.
I remember when Moldova was one of a very few countries poorer than Romania.
Very familiar.
Everything is a threat to Russia. Leichtenstein is a threat. Andorra is a threat. My momma’s cat is a threat.
Anything other than abject capitulation to every Russian whim and demand is a "terrible provocation". Russians have been playing this game for decades ... China and North Korea play the same game. It's why they, and leftists, have always oppposed a robust strategic defense ... that would take away their blackmail tool.
A plague upon them all.
How dare an independent and sovereign country like Moldova voluntarily decide to accede to the E.U., join NATO, and/or rejoin with Romania!?
Russia - which does not even border Moldova - obviously has the right to intercede (read: invade and annex)!

Yes, it is. They’re going to have problems until they kick out the squating Russians. Russia is a cancer that brings only misery and death where it goes.
Toss the disputed territory in with the remains of Ukraine that Poland gets.
