America may soon face one of two kinds of left-wing authoritarianism. One is the soft despotism of liberal technocracy. This authoritarianism wouldn’t overthrow the present structures of our society or upend the economy. In fact, it would have the support of the regime’s major institutions. It would seriously curb civil liberties, such as free speech and gun rights, and feel much less democratic. More people would be arrested over memes, but much would remain the same. Political life in America would look more like contemporary Western Europe.
The other is a radical populism in the mold of Hugo Chavez, the Venezuelan socialist who turned his resource-rich South American nation into a hellhole. This authoritarianism would threaten America’s institutions and overthrow the economic order. It would not be supported by the powers that be and would crush civil liberties to enact massive wealth redistribution programs.

Liberal authoritarianism cannot help itself. It goes this way every time.
correct me if I am wrong, but my perception is that most populists in the US tend strongly against socialism.
I would lean more toward them doubling down on the first option, which is already strongly underway. Continue to develop the techocracy in which the deep state is covertly married to the ‘private sector’ power corporations that control almost all information and data (not just social media, but all information and financial sectors) and force the appearance of “normality” on the populace

I have said for years that Europe is going to see ethnic cleansing. If they do it soon, a lot of Muslims will die. If Europe delays, then the cleansing will involve a lot of dead Europeans.
I’m now saying that about America. We can’t live with these people and they don’t intend to.
AOC has been complaining that “reforms” don’t go far enough and criticizing her own party “moderates”
Note that Chavez early on had a gun confiscation program making any meaningful revolt nearly impossible. We have to thank our founders for making the right to eep and bear arms a cornerstone of our Bill of Rights
