Unattended children in downtown Asheville, never! Could pass and OD’ed body in the street. Happens often, sad. Lots of nice people live there, though. Badly mismanaged city at this time. Hate to see its downward trajectory.
Surrounding areas ok for the most part. Actually, not that much violence; isolated events mostly.

West Jefferson is a good possibility especially for people who will panic if they don’t have a restaurant within 10 miles of their house. Go a bit north of there on the Virginia line you’ll find good mountain folk who are more conservative. If the sound of gunshot is going to upset you, stay in West Jefferson.
Try Greenville, SC. Similar type of town, but saner, thought that may change......
I had a friend that lived there for about three years, about 15 years ago. She was very happy there, and I met some nice friends of hers that lived in Asheville. I also have a wife of a nephew, whose family lives in Asheville. But, like this report and ones that came before it in the last decade, Asheville seems to be out of the running, for a relocation spot.
Yea, and it hasn’t done anything to decrease their influence up here either.

I live in an Appalachian county of 17,000 people. It is solid Trump country. One of my liberal friends told me she knew both of the liberals in the county. I live in town and gunfire is also frequently heard.
Twenty years ago I was fielding regular inquiries regarding visiting S.F. (Where to stay, where to eat, what to do, etc.)
Ten years ago there were steady calls asking whether it was safe and is it still worth it?
Now the calls have stopped. Word is out.

Ashville NC and Burlington VT have the highest concentration of lesbians per square mile, than anywhere in the world.
When I say lesbians, I am not talking about the type you see in porn films. No, these are the 250 pound fullbacks, bull moose dykes that will burn your eyes like Medusa’s stare.
In many ways, these progressive hell holes are worse than some third world shithole countries, with all the STD’s and venereal diseases that come with it. The very core of the democrat party base.
Come 60 miles south to Greenville, SC. It is very Conservative city and just named in the top 5 places to live/retire. Big difference between NC and SC...
Right now, I wouldn’t want to own a big window mansion in Beverly Hills. Roving gangs will come for them.
There are other towns nearby that aren’t libtard. It is concentrated in Asheville city, but some of the other areas beyond Buncombe County are not. Try Sylva or Lake Junaluska areas. Or even Mars Hill, Waynesville, Old Fort, or Marshall.
Sanford, Florida was the same.
