Newtown Gun Controllers: There Is No Such Thing as ‘Constitutional Carry’

The gun control group Newtown Action Alliance is responding to the constitutional carry push in Florida by tweeting that “there is no such thing as ‘constitutional carry.'”

Twenty-five states have constitutional carry, and Republicans in Florida and South Carolina are now racing to see which state will be number 26, but Newtown Action Alliance says it does not really exist.

Newtown Action Alliance’s tweeted their opinion:

Newtown Action Alliance @NewtownAction Just to be clear, there is no such thing as “constitutional carry”. The constitution didn’t give anyone the right to carry guns publicly without permits, background checks, or training. This term was fabricated by the gun lobby to push for its any guns to anyone everywhere agenda

Newtown Action Alliance followed the tweet with another, asking gun controllers to urge Florida’s legislature to oppose the constitutional carry bill, suggesting the bill “will increase FL homicide and violence crime.”

On December 29, 2022, the Maine Wire noted that crime fell in Maine after the state abolished its concealed carry permit requirement in 2015.

FBI data shows violent crime beginning a decline in 2016 that continued through 2020.

“The constitution didn’t give anyone the right to carry guns publicly without permits, background checks, or training.”

Well, technically they are correct, since everyone already had that right before the Constitution was ratified.

The 2nd Amendment says the government can't interfere with your right to keep and bear arms. There is nothing in the 2nd Amendment that "grants rights". Those pre-exist the Constitution itself.

No, they are not right. The constitution says “Shall not be infringed”. That means the US Constitution says you have a right to keep and bear your firearms.

It is quite literally, “Constitutional Carry” to carry concealed or not, without a permit.

The Bill of Rights does not enumerate what we are allowed to do. It is a list of things the Government is forbidden from doing.

It is utterly clear.

It wasn’t given to government.

Its existence preceded all governments. What you are expressing is a statement dictating that it was forbidden by government to be infringed upon.

It goes even further than that which is why I have crammed as much of the preamble to the Bill of Rights in my tagline:

The constitution didn’t give anyone the right to carry guns publicly without permits, background checks, or training.

It does, however, recognize that right when it says "the right of the people (all citizens) to keep (own) and bare (carry) arms (weapons of all types) shall not be infringed (violated or encroached upon).

urge Florida’s legislature to oppose the constitutional carry bill, suggesting the bill “will increase FL homicide and violence crime.”

They made the same argument when FL passed their original CCW carry law.

This takes us all the way back to the late 1980s, when Florida became one of the earliest 'Shall Issue" concealed carry States. The gun-haters condemned it as "The Gunshine State", and swore up and down that there would be blood on the streets; shootouts over parking spaces, mass pandemonium, murder on an unprecedented scale.

All of which didn't happen.

They're regurgitating the same lies.

A plague upon their house.

Yup. Got my FL one in ‘87 IIRC. Shoot outs at Publix daily, blood in the streets like hurricane rains. 😏👍

If we must have ‘permits, background checks, and training’ to exercise the rights enumerated under the 2nd Amendment, then it logically follows we also must have ‘permits, background checks, and training’ to exercise any of the other rights enumerated in the first 10 Amendments. No free speech, no freedom from self-incrimination, no freedom from search and seizure, no excessive bail, yadda-yadda-yadda, without permits, background checks and training.

The Constitution is NOT available as a cafeteria plan, what’s sauce for the goose must also be sauce for the gander. Whatever prerequisites or conditions are applied to any clause of any one amendment must likewise be applied to all others.

Newtown Action Alliance makes the baseless claim that “there is no such thing as “constitutional carry”.
Newtown Action Alliance, without evidence, suggested the bill “will increase FL homicide and violence crime”.
Gee, this is fun.
