As Russia’s invasion of Ukraine approaches the one-year mark, all eyes are trained on one small, war-ravaged city: Bakhmut. There, in Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region, is where one of the fiercest and bloodiest battles of the war is currently playing out as Russia tries to achieve its first major battlefield victory since its capture of the eastern cities of Severodonetsk and Lysychansk over the summer.
Although Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described the situation on the frontline as “very difficult” in his Sunday evening address to Ukrainian citizens, Russian forces have yet to encircle the city.
This months-long battle for Bakhmut has come at the cost of hundreds of Ukrainian and Russian casualties per day, according to some estimates, as well as the city of Bakhmut itself. “Burnt ruins” is how Zelensky described it during one of his nightly addresses in December, the outcome of what has been likened to World War I-style trench warfare.
Russia’s offensive on eastern Ukraine, parts of which Moscow purported to annex in September, reflects Vladimir Putin’s long-held aim of capturing Ukraine’s eastern regions of Donetsk and Luhansk, collectively known as the Donbas—a tall order that Russian troops have been tasked with achieving by March, according to Ukrainian officials.

I see it as everyone is losing. Only winner is military industrial complex.
Well, if they win there, they can move forward and literate Slavyansk next and that opens up some more road networks.
Liberate Slavyansk. If memory serves that is the first place in the Donbass, that the nazi militias attacked after the 2014 coup.
Very important to get those militias out of town quickly. You don’t want them hanging around!
At this point, Russia wants this as a bargaining chip to end the war. What isn’t said is Russia gets their hands on our technology, new gap and the neocons get their military contracts. Which the Republicans want to stop.
It’s not clear to me what US technology the Russians are going to get. The Ukrainians are using decades-old stuff.
In what way is the US losing?
Well, it is losing, in general, socially, culturally, economically, etc., but not in the case of Ukraine.
The military industrial complex is winning.
This is a stenography job that repeats words promulgated by Karolina Hird, a Russia analyst at The Institute for the Study of War - an American research group and think tank founded in 2007 by military historian (NEOCON!) Kimberly Kagan.
The Kagans, Victoria Nuland, Joe Biden, Barack Obama and their Neocon ilk are those responsible for the single most spectacular failure in the history of diplomacy. The blood of this war is singularly on their hands.
Setting the Record Straight; Stuff You Should Know About Ukraine

I think you might see an advance in the south from Marinka (Vugledar is on the left flank) and a drive across steppe to Pokrovske. In the North you may see a drive across the Oskil and the retaking of Liman the Izium. With that, the Donbass becomes indefensible from a logistics perspective because the supply lines are all accross Steppe. The Donbass is industrialized and full of roads, hills, gullies and wooded areas.
The Russians are unable to interdict Ukrainian supply lines on any sort of terrain, unless these are in close artillery range. The RuAF is unable to use manned aircraft over Ukrainian airspace due to the SAM threat. This has been the case since last March.
Interesting. Thanks.

Yep...hell of a cost. Everyone is losing over there.
What will happen first? Bakhmut will be surrounded by russia or Putin will die of cancer?
