The great majority of polls are not reliable; they are easily biased by the way the questions are phrased and positioned and by the attitude of the people asking the questions..
The candidates do their own polls, of course, but even there a positive result can artificially boost their confidence and other factors.
When a candidate requests a totally unbiased poll, that is the only time they and only they know what is really happening. Unless the opposing candidate has spies in the other camp.
It helps to look at them that way. They are basically just another campaign tool.
You can figure out a bit about how the private polls are going by watching the candidate’s behavior and statements etc.
