The discovery of Lithium reserves in the Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir would be a game changer for the country and for the Union Territory. It would lead to economic development for the people of J&K, officials said. “The discovery of 5.9 million tonnes of Lithium reserves in Reasi district is the most important discovery in recent times. It means that we are second in the world after Chile. It is a game changer for the country and J&K,” Secretary, Geology and Mining, Amit Sharma told this newspaper.

The reserves have been discovered by Geological Survey of India (GSI) in Salal-Haimana area of Reasi district. It is for the first time that the lithium reserves have been discovered in the country. At present, Chile has world’s largest known lithium reserves at 9.2 million tonnes followed by Australia (5.7 million tonnes), Argentina (2.2 million tonnes), and China (1.5 million tonnes).

Sharma said with the discovery of lithium deposits, India has joined only a select group of countries having lithium reserves. “We have entered a global map of elite nations having lithium deposits”. Lithium is a chemical element used in rechargeable batteries of mobile phones, laptops, digital cameras and electric vehicles, etc. It is also known by another name, “white gold”.

“It will take us to self-sufficiency (aatam nirbar bharat), which is the dream of PM Narendra Modi,” Sharma said. He said it will lead to economic development of J&K as the economy will get a big boost. “It will create employment opportunities for the youth and bring in a lot of exchequer”.

Sharma said with India having a G-20 presidency, the discovery will add to the stature of the country. Experts said the cost of mobile phones and electric vehicles would come down once the extraction of the lithium starts. On concerns that lithium extraction will damage the environment, the official said, “All the precautions and care will be taken during the extraction. The discovery has come about 26 years after the GSI submitted a detailed report about the presence of lithium in Reasi.

India should push ahead with solar power generation. With the massive Thar desert it can generate loads of electricity.

Add in solar panels in its Deccan areas and it could eliminate imported fuels and be self sufficient in energy

One of the problem with most solar energy schemes - you have to have a source of water to wash dirt and dust and other foreign debris off the panels (photovoltaic or reflective).

What substance is hard to find in a desert?

Hopefully they can earmark some of the lithium for medicine to treat the increase in cases of mental illnesses.

Still nowhere near enough. The world will need 25x more lithium than exists to be mined. Ditto cobalt and vanadium.

https://www.americanthinker.com/blog/2023/02/new_geological_study_proves_that_the_green_energy_movement_is_impossible_to_achieve.html

And no country anywhere can achieve energy independence based on intermittent technologies like solar and wind anyway. Every grid MUST have continuous base-load generation capability, which means fossil fuels or nuclear. Period, end of story.

Cobalt and vanadium are essential for high strength steels. Divert them to “green energy” products and we will have a 19th century technology. Which to our globalist elites is a feature, not a bug.

But meanwhile those same elites will reap fantastic personal profits chasing the opium dream of “green power”.

Sure, but water on a scale necessary for cleaning a solar array is not easy to find in a desert. That’s why they’re called deserts. :P

Camel piss could be useful in a desert.

Huge amount of lithium deposits found in maine. The governor Mills who is in the pockets of leftists has blocked mining.

“...district of Jammu and Kashmir”

Just India’s luck to find lithium at THAT location.

Anyone now investing heavily in lithium is way overdue to the game and incurring great risk. IMHO

The question is whether the next-gen battery tech will be permitted to flourish on its own…or will it be quashed by those protecting their investments?

Not so great for clearing solar panels, though.
