His support among Republicans at this early stage of the primary cycle puts him in rare company.
Is Ron DeSantis the next Scott Walker? It’s a question I’ve been hearing a lot lately.
The premise is that there’s an important similarity between the two: They both earned the affection of conservatives by “owning the libs” as governors, rather than by giving soaring speeches or otherwise demonstrating the skills to win a presidential nomination.
In the end, Mr. Walker’s success in Wisconsin did not translate to the national stage; the implication is that Mr. DeSantis’s success in Florida might not translate either. A wave of articles over the last few weeks has questioned whether he has the charisma, charm and likability to win the nomination. If he falters, the ending of his campaign might read a like lot the story of Walker for President.
But, at least at the beginning of the race, Mr. DeSantis is no Scott Walker. He would start the campaign in a very different and far stronger position, even if there is still no way to know whether he “has what it takes” to succeed against former President Donald J. Trump. What sets Mr. DeSantis apart from Mr. Walker? To be blunt: how many people already say they want him to be president.
In this narrow but important respect, Mr. DeSantis has a lot more in common with Barack Obama or Ronald Reagan than Mr. Walker or the other promising first-time candidates who did not live up to high hopes in recent years, like Kamala Harris, Rick Perry or Wesley Clark.
Overall, Mr. DeSantis has 32 percent support in polls taken since the midterm elections. This is not a fleeting product of a wave of favorable media coverage. Instead, he has made steady gains in the polls over the last two years.

We already don't like Trump much. Cruz absolutely slaughtered Trump here in 2016 primary after Walker dropped out. But we are mature enough and hate Hillary enough that we voted Trump in the general that cycle, and he won.
Not so in 2020. Trump did poorly enough in WI that the cheating in our liberal pockets beat him.
Then, in 2022, Trump f'd us over with his gov pick, who choked and left this red state with a blue gov for another 4 yrs. Gov Walker was backing his old LT. Trump wanted somebody else because Pence also supported Walker's LT Gov. Nobody here gives a crap about Pence, but Walker's goofy mug would be on a mountain - if we had one.
So, it is not just PA, GA, etc that are stuck with the stench of Trump's 2022 failures. We got it all over us here too.
Don is pants pissing scared of Ron, obviously.
Walker actively campaigning for Ron could lock Trump out of both WI and FL.
Increasingly, SuperDon's path to victory runs thru his mind, down his cape and into the winds of historic failure.
Don the Selfish loves to threaten other good Rs with thumb screws of public humiliation. When he is the one in danger of throwing away his memorable wins for America by ending up a forgotten 1 for 3 loser.
Quit now Don. Or be embarrassed beyond the grave.
Not a good sign when the NY Times starts cheer leading for you.
The last thing this country needs in the White House is an Ivy League lawyer who has been a government employee all his life.
1. When the Milwaukee prosecutor used all his power to illegitimately persecute Republicans, Walker did nothing.
He should have shouted about it from the rooftops and done everything he could to fight back. The same prosecutor was a node of the election problems in Wisconsin in 2020.
2. For his national aspirations, he had a modest pro-Second Amendment record. That was to his credit, but there are persistent rumors he did everything he could to stop Constitutional Carry from being passed in Wisconsin.
When the NYT is pushing for a particular Republican to run for office, that right away is a suspicious move on their part. What the NYT really wants is to set up a double death match between Donald Trump and Ron DeSantis, effectively denying Trump the election in 2024, and DeSantis the election in 2028.
Who says the NYT doesn’t want to play the long game? The CCP has taught them well.
The NYT is not in love with DeSantis, he’s just a vehicle to try and take out Trump. They’ll do anything, they’ll use any means. If successful, DeSantis will become DeathSantis to them overnight.
[The NYT is not in love with DeSantis, he’s just a vehicle to try and take out Trump.]
That is absolutely correct. It’s quite obvious what the NYT is doing here. It would be like Chuck Todd doing the same thing. Which he probably will. Asymmetrical warfare under the guise of “advice” - from the hardcore Leftists.
IOW, basic divide-and-conquer techniques.
Can’t they find anything just a tad bit more relevant to write about?
Don’t waste your time trying to reason with DESANTIS HATERS.
It’s a big joke to them.
We were screwed in the 2022 PA ELECTIONS after Trump intervened.
Now we’re ruled by democrat fascists in PA.
Every time Republicans fight, more Democrats are born.
It is so funny to see the supporters of 5-time loser Trump claim this is a puff piece about DeSantis.
It is a warning to the left that DeSantis is more electable than Walker.
It is a warning to the left that DeSantis should not be underestimated.
There is no love of DeSantis in this.
But those supporting the serial loser need to spin things because DeSantis has conducted himself as an excellent conservative governor who stands up to the mobs, supports the Second Amendment and is America First.
The left is telling us who they want to run against in 2024.
“DeSantis has conducted himself as an excellent conservative governor who stands up to the mobs, supports the Second Amendment and is America First.”

You’re right, of course.
“So, it is not just PA, GA, etc that are stuck with the stench of Trump’s 2022 failures.”

Yes, it was bad when Trump intervened in our 2022 PA election.
Thanks to him and mail in ballots, FETTERMAN is my SENATOR.
“He would have served his country so much better in the 2013-2015 timeframe by admitting his constitutional ineligibility, teaching the rest of the country just why he was ineligible..”
I agree, except he should have taught us that in 2008 and spared us Barry.
“It’s not 2016 and Ron DeSantis isn’t Ted Cruz.“
My point exactly - Ron DeSantis is not clueless Ted Cruz.
Which is why he will complete his important mission as Governor of Florida, rather than add himself to the long list of Republicans who thought they could trump Trump.
A losing team runs the same play.
Unless DeSantis can partner with Dominion, USPS & their Ruby Freemans, he has absolutely no chance to win.
Stupid headline.
Hear, hear!
