Murphy reintroducing background check legislation after MSU shootin

Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) is reintroducing legislation to require background checks on all commercial gun purchases in the aftermath of the Michigan State University shooting that left three students dead.

Murphy has pushed for stronger gun control legislation throughout his time in Congress, and is now once again calling for mandatory background checks for every firearm sale.

If the measure became law, prospective gun buyers would need to undergo a background check for the sale or transfer of guns, including online sales, purchases at gun shows and through unlicensed sellers, according to the bill.

Murphy told Poppy Harlow on “CNN This Morning” that some states do not require background checks on online sales or during gun shows. He says the majority of “crime guns” used in states like New York and Connecticut are purchased from other states who do not have universal background checks.

I agree with background check...of ALL folks who were supported by Soros. If they were supported by Soros, wipe them out. Wipe them ALL out. Completely.

The unlicensed urban gangster who sells a gun to an underage urban gangster will be required to perform a background check?

(Yes, I'm sure he will comply!)

He wants to punish the people who are not responsible for the problem, rather than pursue the people who are responsible for the problem. This is modern liberalism in a nutshell.

How about you sponsor a bill that says when a criminal is arrested for illegal weapons violations, they are given a trial, convicted, and sent to prison? Since, if they had such a law, maybe, just maybe this shooter would have been in prison.

Oh, that’s right! They have such a law and no one followed the dang thing!!

Then just sponsor a bill that says you have to follow the law! This way, BOTH the judge who let this murderer go and maybe future murdering bad guys will follow THIS law?!?

These people aren’t stuck on stupid. They are eaten up with metastasized moron syndrome!!

The stupid Democrats’ response to all of the problems they have created is always more government, more draconian measures, more power-tripping.

And it never solves anything.

Does Murphy propose legislation to study the breakdown of the family and what can be done to promote stable, two parent families?

Expanded background checks would not have prevented the MSU shooting because the Michigan prosecutor reduced McRae’s 2020 firearm charge to a misdemeanor. Misdemeanor charges do not flag the NICS background check system.

If the federal appeals court does its duty in the Pennsylvania case expanding background checks would not help ..... even if the Michigan prosecutor had done his job. McRae’s 2020 conviction was for firearm possession. It was not a violent offense.

Citizens should not be required to be excessively virtuous in order to have constitutional rights

The problem with the MSU shooting is that McRae was a violent, racist nutcase who took advantage of a gun-free zone. If even one person in the vicinity had a gun McRae might have been stopped.

Exactly.

Instead of eliminating guns, we need to remove probably 40% of our judges and prosecutors.

Almost without exception, all mass shooters have been know to the cops, convicted, prosecuted or investigated at various times for felonies....yet go unpunished or punished in an ineffective manner.

Completely and utterly unenforceable as every state that tried it has found out. Since there is no gun registry in most states, the Government has no clue who actually owns what. Hence the government has ZERO way to prove I sell my buddy Tom a Rifle, he pays in cash and there is no receipt, and we don’t bother with the “universal” background check. In fact, in Colorado, the State police estimated that only 9% of private sales bothered to get the mandatory background check run.

NICS is for when you purchase from FFL dealer. This bill calls for universal background checks, i.e. private transfers will have to use an FFL dealer to submit the NICS request.
