Chinese state propaganda outlets pilloried leftist President Joe Biden for making a surprise visit to Kyiv, Ukraine, on Monday, describing his in-person meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky as “irrational and selfish.”
Zelensky, who endured an acrimonious relationship with Biden prior to Russia’s full-scale invasion of his country last year, had been urging Biden to visit Ukraine for over a year with no success. Biden planned a visit to nearby Poland this week, marking the one-year anniversary of the Russian “special operation,” but arrived in Ukraine first.

Biden travelled to Kiev purely for a photo op, to allow a few controlled-MSM talking points this AM, push the simplistic narrative, and forestall as long as possible opposition in Congress to the $$ billions going to Ukraine.

I have to admit, Biden usually does that uneven kinda slow stumble shuffle. But when danger called, and those air sirens wailed, he almost appeared to shuffle a bit faster. Almost a heroic shuffle. Certainly historic, no other President has shuffled like that.

Today I ask, why does Biden go to Ukraine?
By personally appearing in Ukraine, Biden has sent many self-defeating signals. His appearance there makes this Biden's war. Biden's presidency has now been staked on his appearing to win this war.
By pinning his reputation to success in the war, Biden has succeeded in infusing even more politics into our support of Ukraine. That means negotiations to end the war will be more blatantly political.
Since the war has now become Biden's war, money for that war that has to go through Congress, such as that $1 billion he promised yesterday, it is more likely to be reflexively opposed by more Republicans simply because it is Biden's war. Heretofore Mitch McConnell was carrying water for the war but now Biden has stepped to the front of the line unnecessarily.
If the war drags on, if it goes badly, or if it is perceived to go badly and America's reputation therefore suffers, so does Biden's and, by extension, so does the reputation of elected Democrats across the board. Biden might thus have weakened the Democrat party.
Biden's options to yield on some negotiating points has been limited by his appearance in Kyiv because of his history of skedaddle in Afghanistan. His political advisers, while indifferent to the reality, will not want him to look so hapless again.
If it becomes necessary to divert our essential war matériel away from Ukraine to the Asian theater, Biden will be able to do so only at the sacrifice of his reputation and the Chinese now know that, as do Biden's advisors.
Biden's appearance makes the war not just his own war but America's war and that is directly contrary to Biden's policy of enlisting the participation of Europe and especially of NATO countries. The tendency in Europe to let America do it has just been given a green light.
Although we must always assume that China will act in accordance with its own perceived national self interests rather than America's ploys to separate China from Russia, China was just given an excuse before the world to accelerate any intentions it might have to more closely associate with Russia. This is a dangerous development involving great landmass, great populations and great wealth, as I've written about here months ago.
To the degree that America's expenditures in Ukraine are accelerating our race to a fiscal abyss, Biden has just limited his options to reverse course on spending (not that there is much chance that he will ever seek one). But more from his point of view, he has given away his trump card to fight Republicans on military expenditures in exchange for more spending on socialism. He has gained a talking point but the country creeps closer to a bad ending.
The upside for Biden this is hardly more than a sugar high with no discernible long-term upside advantage. We've only begun to explore the downsides.

He’s been Irrational and Selfish all along. What difference does the trip make?
Maybe pick up his bag of cash from the grifting? Grift payments generally don’t get mailed out in a check.
