Vanderbilt University’s education school has apologized after sending a condolence message to staff and students regarding a recent shooting at Michigan State University that was drafted by ChatGPT, the artificial intelligence-powered chat bot.
The letter from the Peabody College’s office of diversity, equity, and inclusion expressed regret about the Michigan tragedy, in which a gunman killed three students and left five others in critical condition last week. The note, signed by associate and assistant deans of the college, included an attribution attached to the bottom that read, “Paraphrase from OpenAI’s ChatGPT AI language model, personal communication, February 15, 2023.”
“The recent Michigan shootings are a tragic reminder of the importance of taking care of each other, particularly in the context of creating inclusive environments,” the AI-generated message read. “As members of the Peabody campus community, we must reflect on the impact of such an event and take steps to ensure that we are doing our best to create a safe and inclusive environment for all.”
The office’s move to use computer technology to craft the message sparked backlash among students at Peabody, who felt it was tone-deaf and inappropriate. Associate Dean for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Nicole Joseph issued an apology to the Peabody community on February 17, noting that relying on ChatGPT was “poor judgment,” the Vanderbilt Hustler reported.
“While we believe in the message of inclusivity expressed in the email, using ChatGPT to generate communications on behalf of our community in a time of sorrow and in response to a tragedy contradicts the values that characterize Peabody College,” the email read. “As with all new technologies that affect higher education, this moment gives us all an opportunity to reflect on what we know and what we still must learn about AI.”

That definitely sums it up. Incredible that they would do this.
Straight from their hearts. /s
So I guess a Hallmark card would be equally impersonal.
HA 🏆
Diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI)
Inclusion, equity and diversity (IED)
Diversity, inclusion and equity (DIE)
Why would they leave the paraphrase on there.
Is it plagiarism to quote anything generated by ChatGPT or AI’s in general.
I used a thesaurus at work today.
Lock me up and throw away the key.
When You Care Enough to Send the Very Best.
First rule of plagiarizing, get rid of the bit that says this was plagiarized.
Reading the correction... did it seem the correction was issued by ai as well?
So the main thing to think about as a result of this tragedy is to create an inclusive environment? They say that 3 or 4 times. When all you have is a DEI hammer, everything looks like an inclusiveness nail.
ChatGPT's Terms of Use includes a requirement that users cannot "represent that output from the Services was human-generated when it is not."
I suspect most people blow off that requirement. So kudos to the DEI folks on that front.
Remember these are the same kinds of people who say “eff your thoughts & prayers”.
Not sure about that.
Actually having an “Associate Dean for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion” shows poor judgment.
Real heartfelt condolences eh?

“Duane Watson’s research focuses on the cognitive processes that underlie interactions between speakers and listeners. In particular, he focuses on how gesture, pitch, rhythm and emphasis in speech is used in communication.
He also explores how individual differences in cognitive abilities and literacy influence language production, comprehension, and reading.”
Perhaps he has an individual difference in cognitive ability and literacy...
Fire them all, hire the chatbot and use the savings to reduce student costs.
I guess they needed a more creative way of saying, “Kill Whitey!”
