Moderna’s fourth-quarter profit tumbled 70% as COVID-19 vaccine sales fell and the drugmaker caught up on a royalty payment.
Moderna said Thursday that its cost of sales jumped nearly a billion dollars to $1.9 billion in the final quarter of 2022. That included a $400-million “catch-up” payment to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases for a new agreement on future royalty sales of the COVID-19 vaccine.
In the U.S., COVID-19 vaccines will be sold commercially for the first time later this year when the federal government stops buying the shots.

Drugmaker Merck said Tuesday its COVID-19 antiviral medication “did not demonstrate a statistically significant reduction” in cutting the risk of coronavirus infections among people living with someone who tested positive for the coronavirus. Merck said its research showed that people treated with its Lagevrio pill were 23.6% less likely to develop COVID than those given a placebo through day 14, failing to meet the goal of the trial. Merck, which was given emergency use authorization for the pill in Dec. 2021 for patients with mild-to-moderate COVID who were at risk of progressing to severe disease, said it would continue with its research and development.
“We remain focused on our ongoing efforts to bring Lagevrio as treatment to appropriate high-risk patients with COVID-19 where its use is authorized or approved, as well as to further study the ways it may benefit patients with other infectious diseases, such as RSV,” ” said Dr. Dean Y. Li, president of Merck

I can honestly say I’m not the least bit concerned about Moderna or any other big pharma losing any quarter profits.
Hopefully their woke boards go full on DEI and invest heavily in ESG and they mandate daily covid injects for all employees.
It’s not only Moderna. The NIH technology was key to the COVID vaccine and given to makers for a faster roll out.
