If copper is $4-$5/oz., many would go out and buy a $200 propane smelter and melt all those 95% copper pennies they have been saving. (Disclaimer: It is illegal to melt US Coins and steal copper) You can already buy 1-pound poured copper bars on eBay.

I don’t think pennies have been pure copper for quite a while. They’re some “cheap” alloy, just like Ike “silver” dollars, which I call LBJ slugs.
