Karl Rove says Ron DeSantis is ‘smart’ to skip CPAC and its ‘meaningless’ straw poll

'Bush's Brain' says CPAC straw poll would be 'completely meaningless.' More evidence is emerging that Karl Rove is a big fan of Ron DeSantis as the 2024 GOP Presidential Primary field shakes out.

In comments on the Fox News Channel’s America’s Newsroom, the former George W. Bush adviser lauded DeSantis for his decision to skip the Conservative Political Action Conference later this week and to “very smartly” take a “measured” approach toward a 2024 rollout.

“Take, for example, this weekend. Rather than going to CPAC — which is a completely pro-Donald Trump crowd and having a number at the end that weekend where he’s made an appearance, and then there’s a straw poll and Trump wins the straw poll — rather than that, what’s he doing? He’s going to Dallas and Houston, Texas, and Orange County, California and speaking to the Republican county committees,” Rove said.

“They’re big galas in each one of those places, making a lot of friends and avoiding what is going to be a sure story at the end of it. ‘Oh, well, he came here and he obviously didn’t make a big impact, because Trump still took the CPAC straw poll,’ which is completely meaningless but nonetheless would be the story coming out of the weekend.”

Rollins endorsement is a kiss of death for a true conservative.

I worked with a good friend of his during the Tea Party Movement 2009 and on.

Had some interesting stories...

Excellent post Iceman.

What exactly do these donors want..... From Ron...

They would get staff positions and pork, business as usual.

I like Trump as a disruptor. Not perfect but he ain’t them if you know what I mean.

So that’s the accepted wisdom now? What is that assertion based on? Trump got 12 million more votes in 2020 than he did in 2016. Did this supposed loss of suburban soccer moms occur before 2020 or after?

In 2016, Trump won the suburbs 47-45 (with Men voting +10% for Trump, women +8% for HRC). In 2020, Biden won Suburbs 54-43%, or a 13% swing in total. Most of that swing D came from suburban women, with just a small piece suburban men. Trump actually did better in Rural (7% swing) and better urban (12% swing) in 2020 than 2016 but suburban vote was huge in 2020, and again, suburban women voted 2:1 for Biden.
More here

Since the 2020 election, it's only continued to get worse. The only chance Trump would have to win the general in 2024 would be if suburbs just stayed home - perhaps a chance for that if the economy is in the tubes - but that would mean virtually any R candidate would win. Desantis would probably win 47 states in that scenario.

Thanks for that info, as unpleasant as it is. It’s my gut feeling that Trump is losing the suburbs. I’ve had too many conversations with suburban folks to think otherwise.

And as a side note, we’re lucky suburban women weren’t allowed to vote for WW II commanders. Patton would have been out, and Frank Sinatra would have been in.

I'm afraid he's moving them permanently to the left as well, although Rasmussens poll with Nikki Haley vs Biden out this week suggests that isn't the case at this point, but it is a risk. Similarly, I think the rural areas will stay solid Red after Trump, although those areas aren't growing - the suburbs are, so that wouldn't be a great long term trade.

Personally, I wish only people who paid at least 5% of their income in taxes in 3 of the last 4 years or at least 20 years were able to vote but that'll never happen.

What the hell is these women’s problem?

I would like to see a breakdown of single vs married women, and how they vote.

I haven’t seen it broken out for suburbs only but married women voted Trump by ~10% in 2020 while single women voted for Biden by ~35-40% for the total population.

Agreed, but Trump should also be winning married women by 25-30%

“Rove is pushing DeSantis and, from a recent thread, I think Bush is as well. “

Isn’t the Bush family holding a big whoop-de-doo for DeSantis very soon? I think I heard that on RAV, or read it on a screen crawl.

But at least they can eventually come around.

There’s no hope for the single ones, they are literally holding the rest of country hostage, because you cannot win a national election unless you can get at least 45% of their vote.

Like all surveys, the Pew poll you cited, relies on weighting in order for their samples to match the characteristics of the entire population - which in this case was the entire population of people who voted in the 2020 Presidential election, which was taken to be 155.5 million voters (81.2 million Biden voters plus 74.2 millions Trump voters).

The bottom line is that Pew adjusted their sampling results to match fraudulent election numbers. Pew accepted the official election numbers uncritically and adjusted their sample accordingly. Their published results are only as reliable as the data they used. Garbage in, garbage out.

That makes no sense - why would they have Trump doing better in urban then?
