Karl Rove says Ron DeSantis is ‘smart’ to skip CPAC and its ‘meaningless’ straw poll

'Bush's Brain' says CPAC straw poll would be 'completely meaningless.' More evidence is emerging that Karl Rove is a big fan of Ron DeSantis as the 2024 GOP Presidential Primary field shakes out.

In comments on the Fox News Channel’s America’s Newsroom, the former George W. Bush adviser lauded DeSantis for his decision to skip the Conservative Political Action Conference later this week and to “very smartly” take a “measured” approach toward a 2024 rollout.

“Take, for example, this weekend. Rather than going to CPAC — which is a completely pro-Donald Trump crowd and having a number at the end that weekend where he’s made an appearance, and then there’s a straw poll and Trump wins the straw poll — rather than that, what’s he doing? He’s going to Dallas and Houston, Texas, and Orange County, California and speaking to the Republican county committees,” Rove said.

“They’re big galas in each one of those places, making a lot of friends and avoiding what is going to be a sure story at the end of it. ‘Oh, well, he came here and he obviously didn’t make a big impact, because Trump still took the CPAC straw poll,’ which is completely meaningless but nonetheless would be the story coming out of the weekend.”

Well it could be due to the gay sex scandal that CPAC founder Matt Schlapp is currently accused of. I’ve not seen him deny it publicly. Of course, this wouldn’t bother Trump, who’s a big supporter of gay marriage anyway, so he’ll be there.

Many would-be presidential candidates will skip CPAC because it’s mired in scandal

“For example, if Rove says that 1+1 = 2, I won’t therefore automatically believe that 1+1 equals something else.”

That’s a good way to put it. Rove cannot be counted on to advance the conservative agenda, but he seems to be pretty good on how “the game” is played. Swamp creatures know the Swamp.

This is just boilerplate political jargon from Karl Rove, regardless of whether or not this is “smart” or not.

It’s helping Rove to stay in the news, and that’s what matters to him.

If neither Trump or DeSantis can be controlled by the RINOs, then their best bet is to split the GOP, pitting the two most likely candidates in the next couple of election cycles against each other and then waiting for someone they can control. They’re not deeply affected by Democrat policies, so it’s just a matter of waiting for someone like, say, Nikki Haley or even Tulsi Gabbard (if they can lure her into the party) to be a willing marionette.

Just my opinion though as a bemused observer.

Cpac is grass roots and Rove says, go to the real power brokers. DeSantis follows his advice. I’d never support him.

Did you object to the open border Muslim who used to run CPAC??

You prefer rumor to make your case.

Bush’s brain (war criminal Karl Rove) supports RDS. Color me shocked.

You do realize its purely to spite Trump. They don’t actually support RDS. Trump, unfortunately, has killed his chances with too many white suburban women IMO to win. He’s also very up there in age by 2025-2028. Of the non-Trumps, RDS is by far the best choice.

Karl Rove and the Bushies are the kiss of death.

DeSantis needs to punt them all, and run for president in 2028.

The only thing he says that could be construed as pro DeSantis is that the straw poll is meaningless. I am sure it would be more meaningful if DeSantis was a candidate in it. But I have to agree with Rove that DeSantis has nothing to gain from losing to Trump in this poll.

The Only Trumpers would rather go down with the Trump ship than have a chance to win with another candidate. I don’t expect DeSantis going to run now since it’s becoming clear Trump World is on a kamikaze mission.

Rove is an irrelevant RINO hack and his political views obsolete. There’s no replacement for Trump at this time, certainly not another deep state neocon like DeSantis. If the Republicans don’t run Trump they might as well not run anybody.

I don’t care much about the age thing. But yes, you are right about Trump killing his chances with the suburban soccer moms. And that’s a real pity. We need MAGA back in the White House. Trump needs that squishy middle to get him there. Unfortunately, that squishy middle is pretty much gone from him.

Yea Because talking to the grass roots is meaningless to this group. Says a lot, doesn’t it? His advice is, the grass roots is Trump’s base, go talk to the party bosses in Texas. DeSantis agrees and does just that. Pathetic if you ask me.

"Meaningless poll" Karl? Your buddy George W. Bush won the Washington CPAC straw poll in 2008, when he was running for re-election, so I'm guessing he won the same straw poll in 1999 or 2000 when he first ran for President. Couldn't find an article relating to the 1999/2000 CPAC straw poll:

Bush Wins CPAC Straw-Poll
