The Ukrainian military might pull its forces back from the key stronghold of Bakhmut, an adviser to Ukraine's president has said in remarks that suggest Russia may capture the city that has become a symbol of Ukrainian resistance.
Kremlin forces have waged a bloody, months-long offensive to take Bakhmut, a city of salt and gypsum mines in eastern Ukraine that has become a ghost town.
"Our military is obviously going to weigh all of the options. So far they've held the city but, if need be, they will strategically pull back," Alexander Rodnyansky, an economic adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, told CNN.
"We're not going to sacrifice all of our people just for nothing."
The battle for Bakhmut has come to embody Ukraine's determination, with the city's defenders holding out against relentless shelling and Russian forces suffering heavy casualties.
Bakhmut lies in Donetsk province, one of four provinces Russia illegally annexed.
Moscow controls half of Donetsk province.

“...key stronghold of Bakhmut”
So I guess the lie we kept hearing here that Bakhmut was NOT an important city is ‘no longer operative’.
It’s already a ghost town...so they’re defending what??
About darn time! What kind of an idiot is this guy?

The INSIDE OF A MEAT GRINDER?
How are they going to get out? Every road out of the city is within range of artillery.
A position on the line. Useful in order to hold the line. It’s a hard place to take by direct assault.
🇷🇺 have advanced further northwest of Bakhmut, continuing to restrict the possibility of a withdrawal from the city.
It’ll be presented in western media as some kind of mastermind strategic move.... If there’s any semblance that Ukraine are losing, there will be even less support for sending them money and that’s already low.
You can believe what you wish.
Once Ukraine is cleared out of Bakhmat, they are finished in Donetsk and Donbass.
I’ve been hearing scores of knowledgeable and objective people say that Bakhmut was only important because Russia is desperate for a victory, and really it’s of no great strategic importance outside of that, and that was before the conflict there began going south.
there seems to be one minor road to get out. If they leave the heavy armor/artillery behind, they can save the troops and Bidet will resupply them with our equipment and tax dollars....minus his 10% and the corrupt Ukraine’s 80% and what ever they split selling our equipment on the black market......leaving the Ukraine soldiers to die. Just like Russia did to a lesser extent.
Damn, they were on their way to Moscow and now that happens. Probably only slow them down a day or so.
It’s a bit late for that, Bakhmut appears to be totally surrounded and cut off from help at present...
We’ve heard reports that intercepted transmissions from eastern Ukraine include polish voices.
Rumour has it that there’s a million dollar bounty on the first Abrams, $500k for the first Bradley.
One thing about the Wagner group, call them crazy, criminals, whatever - they have a reputation for winning, no matter the cost. Not the guys I want to have coming at my foxhole.
