An assault is defined as an intermediate powered selective fire small arm rifle. The M-16 and AK-47 being the most common examples. A battle rifle is a full powered semi-auto rifle.
Defined by who? You?
Your "battle rifle" doesn't include the primary arm of almost every single military in the world? Assault rifles aren't defined in common US parlance, nor in US law since the Assault Rifle ban went away.

Defined by the historic firearms community colloquially. There are dozens of sites out there using these basic definitions and thousands of people use them. When I got to a site using these terms with regard to rifles they are selling (legal rifles that is) I know exactly what they are talking about. Google it.

Google it.If you go through the firearm community, you'll find ten different ideas of the definition on five different sites. Is the line auto vs semi? Certain caliber size? Combo of both? Do carbines count if they're big enough? Is it defined by your actions (assault as a verb, not an adjective)? And so on. I even found yet another one for you on guns.com:

Actually, most states allow ownership of machine guns, you just have to send your fingerprints to the Treasury and a $200 check and the serial number of the weapon you’re buying. The NFA branch of the ATF is the agency that keeps track of owners of the Class III weapons and suppressors.
