Cuts to SNAP benefits will push millions over the hunger cliff

Millions of people in the U.S. are now facing the precipice of a hunger cliff.

Starting in 2020, the pandemic pulled back the curtain on the tattered state of the U.S. safety net and the millions of families who were falling through. Hunger rates were expected to soar like they did during the Great Recession.

But that’s not what happened.

Thanks to a pandemic expansion of the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, millions of Americans kept food on their tables during an unprecedented public health and economic emergency. These “emergency allotments” made food easier to access and increased the number of people who were eligible. Hunger rates stayed put during the emergency — and poverty actually fell.

What happened to the old days when the government handed out free powdered milk, flour, cheese, and beans from the back of a truck and people took it home and made “meals” out of it?

The extra bump in Food stamps, led to increased food prices, close to double in the meat aisle. Now they cut the amount paid out and people will scream. I get it, I really do. People are fat because carbs are the cheapest foods, nice lean meats and fresh veggies cost the most.

That “food cliff” is according to the definition by by question from the government, “have you ever felt like you’re hungry?”

Ya, I am a poor senior and have to use food stamps, was smart and will have on the 10 of this month 800 to 900 in food stamp benefits, I only get what I need. Shop wisely. My monthly benefit will go down to 25.00 a month in April.

SNAP includes the popular junk foods, which lead to the obesity preventing 80% of young people being ineligible for the military. A recent article in Epoch Times links the two and reaffirms the CDC article below

Mine already went down by half to $84 a month. I do not smoke, drink or eat out. At the end of the month there is about $100 left for fuel and to accumulate for property taxes and home insurance. My home is worth less than $100K, I have cancer and have medical and travel costs.

NOT ALL who use government benefits are useless eaters. I worked for 67yrs, a lot for myself so my SS contributions were not healthy. I paid my own, at around 8% per dollar earned.

Thank you people for working and providing for the needy. I too get mad about 18 yo healthy people on SS and welfare. Beans jumping the border get more than $50K a year. Generational needy people, my 5 daughters and husbands all work. I am not the problem.

I sold my house at a loss, set aside enough to purchase a MH in a 55 and over park. Without that foresight, I would be in a tent. I am NOT in a tent, you may see me walking or biking , do not hate on me.

Blame the politicians, they destroyed the nation with debt, immigration, and so called free trade.

My house is paid for, I got 6 months left on my car, the 1928.00 in ss just covers my bills, no food or gas. I know a few people who were abled body to work but got ssi.. pissed me off, but still worked for what I got.

Everything about food stamps increased the price of food. Most of those people using them don’t even look at prices. I often wonder why someone would pay $6 bucks for a gallon of milk when the other brand right next to it is $4. I knew a guy who would cook 10# of chicken a week for dog food! And I have noticed getto stores have higher prices. Maybe this will lower inflation.

MIDDLE AGED WHITE MALES, SICK, NO YOUNG KIDS, NO JOB, NO INS.

My 51 now 52 had a BS event brought on by his boss refusing to let him go eat, which triggered a ER Heart Event, Heart pumping at 25%, can’t work, will never be able to work, has worked since 16. Was working 6 days 10 hrs a day. His son is a single 20. At Fast Food places because age plays a role in management, when jobs got to demanding jabs, he’d change jobs. Ate their crappy food, lived in a trailer, with his adult son, they shared rent and utilities. Cardio doing a Heart Cath on the 14th. Stent(s) or Bypass or both will be decoided then. Got handed a $25K hospital bill he’ll never be able to pay, they were told he had no health ins. Charity Church Health Center now partially pays for his Diabetic and Wrong heart med. Methodist won’t take, has to be Baptist. That Cardio switched him to a expensive heart drug. Lantus makes him feel like S. Ernesto is the new heart drug over $700 a month.

If things go wrong I’m the one making the decisions, I’ve already lost 2 children. Can’t handle a third.

People placing ALL who NEED assisstance together is wrong. Actual people who cannot possibly work get SS. My MIL gets about 1,800 a month, they charge 1,740 a month for her care in a adult care facility. IDK what they get as a kicker in other ways, but she needs it. Her daughter is undergoing cancer treatments, and I am taking care of her. Nobody is scamming here. Just people grateful for the people who worked for this, and cursing the takers who never have lifted a finger.

Bless you GailA, you are doing yeomans work. To put you in a box with bums is offensive, along with others who sincerely need help and worked until they couldn’t anymore.

When quality food like fresh produce, meats cost more than frozen meals, and junk food, guess what gets bought. Junk food.

When I walked out on my child abusing husband, with $4.00, there were No safety nets, my parents watched my boys while I woirked for $1.50 a hr waiting tables, my HS dipoloma was useless, out moded. I found a $65 run down place, paid utilities, did laundry, mowed the grass. Put up plastic sheeting on windows in the winter. Did that for 10 yrs. Cooked, sewed, used rummage sales. Took my non driving mom shopping which my dad hated, helped her in her garden.. You did what needed to be done.

WAREHOUSE STORAGE TO CREATE FOOD SHORTAGES, HIGHER PRICES

The SCAMS are HORRENDOUS. Kroger’s CEO 2 years ago made $20 Mil a year.

This makes me see red. Big Oil Pocketed $290 Billion in Profits Last Year Through ‘Unabated Price Gouging’ of U.S. Consumers

I know to many people with real sick diseases who can’t and won’t ever be able to work. I’m 74, mutiple Doctor caused health issues them and their killer pills; make less than the average SS, and so will Medicare cuts Medicare I paid in. Maybe those docs won’t want to see me every 6 months, order test I don’t think I need. And won’t have to do that 2 hr drive. Never had SNAP. Lived under Carter/Obama never saw empty shelves, just expensive foods. So I put in a garden. This year I’m adding hens. A lot of work, which I’ll do slower, but won’t starve, been putting away dried beans, pasta, things Seniors need since Senile stole the election. Those hearing aid batteries are outrageous and don’t last long.

I’m more worried about my 52 year old son, worked since he was 16, since he hit 40, good jobs are hard to find, now with a serious heart condition may never work again. Not from the JABS, Fast Food from the places he once managed, then dropped to Asst. Manager, less money when the Lockdowns came. And he knows how to cook, I made sure of that.

Quality food always costs LESS than prepared food and even junk food.

13 Oz bag of Lays potato chips at Walmart costs about $5. I could buy 10 lbs of potatoes for that at our local farmers market
