French President Emmanuel Macron’s cabinet has invoked an article of the French constitution to push through pension reform without a parliamentary vote, according to the AP. Protesters have demonstrated against a plan to raise the retirement age from 62 to 64 since mid-January, and the move is certain to incite an uproar.

“We cannot bet on the future of our pensions and this reform is necessary,” French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne said.

In the US, the Original 1935 Social Security Act mandates that if we reach the point where the Social Security Trust Fund is empty - EVERYONE takes a 20% cut.

That has been the law for 80+ years. It is still the law.

This is a good example of the “democracy” which the EU fights for.

The reforms may well be necessary, but cheese-eating-surrender-monkies jokes aside, the French people are going to seriously react to this. They have a quaint notion that the government should honor its promises to people regardless if the promise was perhaps unwise.

Keep in mind France has the most healthy birth rate of any country in Western Europe. I’d imagine the retirement plans of other countries will be much more unpleasant for their citizens.

You gotta feel sorry for the French...

“Annual leave in France:
French labor law stipulates that full-time employees working a 35-hour week are entitled to a minimum of five weeks of paid leave annually. This is accrued at a rate of 2.5 days leave for every calendar month worked, up to a maximum of 30 days leave. Unless otherwise agreed with your employer, you cannot take more than 24 days’ annual leave consecutively. This equates to around four weeks. Your annual leave entitlement is arranged on a pro-rata basis, which may be something to consider if you work less than 35-hour weeks.”

LOL...35 hour work week PLUS workers get eleven paid national holidays.

French and work are a self-contradiction.

The same kind of adjustment will be needed in America. People are living longer, but our birth rate has sunk and mot kept pace with the elders reaching retirement.

No one wants to mess with Social Security, but changes are needed to avoid a sudden drop of payouts available after 15 to 20 more years.
Whoever makes it happen with probably pay with the end of their own political career. A thankless sort of job.

Just raise the FICA tax on workers under fifty to...oh, say 20%. That should ‘kick the can’ down the road for a bit longer. :-)
