The New York Police Department is lowering its recruitment standards to allow more women on the force, a decision that comes as the Defund the Police movement drives officers out of the ranks in record numbers.
The NYPD this month removed its 1.5-mile timed run requirement in the hopes of increasing its applicant pool after too many women failed the test. Mayor Eric Adams (D.) ultimately approved the decision, despite internal disagreement, the New York Post reported.
The decision to lower standards comes as the NYPD faces a significant reduction in its police force with 3,701 retiring or quitting in 2022, the most since 2002 after the September 11 terror attacks. Professor and former NYPD officer Eugene O’Donnell attributed the scarcity of qualified applicants to the Defund the Police movement.
"They’re the ones that did this, and they’re the ones who are going to have to live with the consequences of a department where the utterly unfit are all that’s left in the pool," O’Donnell told the Post.
Adams resolved a dispute between NYPD commissioner Keechant Sewell and training chief Juanita Holmes, who ultimately succeeded in changing the recruitment process. Now the sole physical evaluation is the Job Standard Test, a six-step course that must be completed in 4 minutes and 28 seconds.
"No cop on patrol runs a mile and a half," said Holmes. "No one’s chasing anyone a mile and a half. Not to mention every day in the gym you’re doing a mile and a half [as part of training]."
Professor and former NYPD officer Jillian Snider disagreed, saying that standards should be tailored to the job's responsibilities and not women’s abilities.
"You should have to have the same physical requirements because you're doing the same exact job," Snider said.
Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face.

The Police Officer Candidate Job Standard Test is a timed event comprising six stations that, together, must be completed in four minutes and twenty-eight seconds (4:28) without stopping. The six stations of the Candidate Job Standard Test include:
1: Barrier Surmount: From a kneeling, weapon-ready position, the candidate sprints 50 feet to surmount a six-foot barrier.
2: Stair Climb: The candidate proceeds from the Barrier Surmount to a six-stair climb system, and completes three over-and-back traverses.
3: Physical Restraint Simulation: The candidate proceeds from the Stair Climb to a tactics-and-training device that measures an applicant’s ability to resist or control force in a physical restraint situation.
4: Pursuit Run: The candidate proceeds from the Physical Restraint Simulation to a 600-foot run around a pattern of cones.
5: Victim Rescue: The candidate proceeds from the Pursuit Run to a simulated victim rescue involving a 35-foot drag of a 176 pound mannequin.
6: Trigger Pull: The candidate proceeds from the Victim Rescue to a trigger-pull station, picks up an inoperative firearm, holds the firearm within a nine inch diameter metal ring and pulls the trigger 16 times with the dominant hand, and 15 times with the non-dominant hand. Once inserted, the firearm must remain within the metal ring for the completion of the trigger pull cycles. Timing is stopped upon completion of the final trigger pull.

Could it be young women are getting less fit?
If that’s the case of lowering standards, the death rate of the nypd is going to climb rapidly.
If you start with the lowest common denominator of fitness for the sake of diversity, you just get a gender- and racially-diverse team of losers.
Police departments have been lowering standards since the 1960s.
The first two I remember were intelligence and height and size, I don’t remember in what order. Then for women, physical fitness and strength.
New York State PERMANENTLY lowers math and reading standards due to the dramatic fall in test scores .. Tests show the schools are failing - Change the test so the schools look better.

The true message is that Cops should not chase arrest evaders on foot. Just let them go. Even if arrested and held, the probability for conviction has become low. So, the chase is just not worth the effort.
Evading arrest has evolved into a human right.

We had 16 minutes (I usually did it in 9)
Just what we need. More fat black female cops.
While that is all true, it is all irrelevant.
If strength and fitness are required for an arrest, the arrest must not be made.
If the other customers in line didn't see it, it didn't happen.
In Texas, we have a State Government that will, when Liberal City Governments go too crazy, spank them hard. Example: The State just took over the Houston ISD. Another: The State regularly disciplines Austin craziness.
But, in New York, the State Government seems as infected (with Liberalism) as the City of New York. Does New York City have to just perish, and become a ghost town, before Common Sense returns?

Less fit women (and men) will have to resort to firearm use sooner than those more fit.
