The Russian president admitted today that sanctions over his war in Ukraine are having a negative effect on the Russian economy.

But Vladimir Putin was also keen to highlight Russia’s nuclear capabilities – announcing that the Americans will no longer be given a warning ahead of a nuclear test launch.

Meanwhile in Ukraine, military action in the region around the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant is increasing, according to the head of the international atomic watchdog, who visited the site today.

Every time the Russians start talking about nukes all I hear is: “we are desperate to find a way out of this war while still saving face!”

The Euros send way more financial aid to Ukraine than does the US. In overall aid paid/committed/pledged Europe is ahead of the US.

With additional data through January 15, 2023 the US again takes the lead. Adding pledges of nearly 37 billion euros in December, the Americans have earmarked a total of just over 73.1 billion euros for Ukraine support. For the EU, the comparable figure is 54.9 billion euros.

Statista is lacking much information. The EU as an organization is now sending weapons and ammunition separately from its member states (also sending weapons). Germany is spending 12 billion euros to send more military equipment to Ukraine. Germany previously spent 3 billion euros.

Poland is increasing its military spending to 4% of GDP, in part to send more weapons and ammunition to Ukraine.

Outside of the EU states, along with many others, the UK, Canada, South Korea, Cambodia, Australia, and Azerbaijan are sending weapons.

Even this isn’t up to date, but it shows many more details. For one, many of the weapons from the other countries are far cheaper than those from the U.S. (low currencies compared to the dollar). Scroll down for a list of individual countries that sent weapons. That list also needs to be updated.

Over the past month, more countries have increased military aid and production.
