LAKE BUENA VISTA — Gov. Ron DeSantis’ handpicked board overseeing Disney World’s government services is gearing up for a potential legal battle over a 30-year development agreement they say effectively renders them powerless to manage the entertainment giant’s future growth in Central Florida.
Ahead of an expected state takeover, the Walt Disney Co. quietly pushed through the pact and restrictive covenants that would tie the hands of future board members for decades, according to a legal presentation by the district’s lawyers on Wednesday.
The Central Florida Tourism Oversight District’s new Board of Supervisors voted to bring in outside legal firepower to examine the agreement, including a conservative Washington, D.C., law firm that has defended several of DeSantis’ culture war priorities.
“We’re going to have to deal with it and correct it,” board member Brian Aungst Jr. said. “It’s a subversion of the will of the voters and the Legislature and the governor. It completely circumvents the authority of this board to govern.” Advertisement
Disney defended its actions.
“All agreements signed between Disney and the district were appropriate and were discussed and approved in open, noticed public forums in compliance with Florida’s Government in the Sunshine law,” an unsigned company statement read.

Can’t Florida get forty of these migrant bus situations lined up and just deliver the migrant-army onto Disney property?
Just take over the whole of WDW. Seize it. Socialists love government control.
They’re into pedo values, activities and culture so seize it -for the children.

Board transferred all it's power to Disney shortly before DeSantis' appointees took over
If true, who tipped off Disney? And was DeSantis aware that Disney knew?
100% one or some of the previous members took MASSIVE bribes. They need to investigate the previous members finances and then arrest them and the Disney agents who arranged the bribes to created this corruption.
Subverting thr governor. Maybe Ron can take up this fight now that they are trying to scurry thr clear intent and use that (the need to win this fight) as a way to gracefully bow out of national politics this cycle.
“DeSantis’ Reedy Creek board says Disney stripped its power”
Why do I think that there was a bit of a wink to Disney from DeSantis? Perhaps because of his behavior last week?
As it is, he’s quickly dropping down into the noise of the other wanna-bee’s.
Governor DeSantis and the Florida legislature have a number of possible countermoves: have the legislature, ethics commission, and statewide grand jury investigate; have the new Reedy Creek board composed of DeSantis appointees sue Disney and use discovery and motion practice to make the case a PR and legal nightmare; propose and adopt legislation that would terminate the old Reedy Creek Board and set up a new governing district with expanded powers, including extra taxing and regulatory power against Disney; and publicly condemn Disney as a bad corporate citizen for its final, dishonest power grab intended to subvert the rule of law.
Disney will end up caving, even if only after suffering a substantial loss in reputation and public standing. DeSantis holds the high cards in this fight, which may well define his second term as governor.
BTTT
Impossible to tell from press accounts what the plastic rat has done, or tried to do.
Press accounts say the plastic rat transferred “all” its Reedy Creek power to the corporation. “All” would mean Disney claims they can still build a nuclear power plant and airport without state oversight. I doubt even the plastic rat would assert that kind of self-privilage.
If the plastic rat has, indeed, taken effective counter measures against the state legislature, then the legislature will have to take effective counter-counter measures.
Seems to me the plastic rat has calculated Governor DeSantis has reached peak power and that future legislators can be rolled. In the meantime this kind of story distracts from the plastic rat's big layoff of employees.
As for the controversy being a distraction for Disney's other troubles, it is a distraction like having a heart attack would be a distraction from cancer. The negative effects are cumulative instead of subtractive.
Why would bribes be needed? The previous members were appointed by Disney, and their jobs and authority are going away. That is plenty of motivation.
The only way to do that is to move to Georgia...or wherever.
Ohhh, then they need to step in and determine if their was collusion to commit fraud and abuse. Charge them accordingly.
...I mean aside from the normal situation where they believe they can payoff the local politicians...which they can!
Just shut down the park until a new and acceptible oversight regime is in place. It would be irresponsible to let any agency operate without appropriate supervision. Shutting down would be the correct and responsible thing to do for the protection of all parties invlved. After a few months of no income they will become very agreeable to Forida govt oversight.
Yes, throwing 75,000 Floridians out of work and shutting down the single largest tourist attraction in the state, losing a source of nearly a billion dollars in tax revenue to state coffers is bound to work.
We need to act within the law... why would we want to become criminals? Makes no sense...
“...why would we want to become criminals?”
Protecting children should not be considered criminal.
