The Hillary-DeSantis Voters
National Review ^ | April 12, 2023 6:30 AM | MICHAEL BRENDAN DOUGHERTY

A new class of voter is waiting to shake up our politics. In 2016, we learned about the crucial importance of “Obama-Trump” voters. Some estimates held that up to 13 percent of Trump’s voters in 2016 had voted for Obama in a previous election. This reflects the moodiness of swing voters, the changing composition of the two parties, and the continuities between the two very different men.

Notably, Obama and Trump both ran their campaigns as critics of NAFTA. Hillary Clinton lost about one out of every four Obama voters who were white men with only high-school education. Some analysts believed that Trump increased the number of Trump Democrats in the 2020 election, even as he activated an even larger coalition to vote against him. One of the characteristics of the Obama-Trump voter was an anti–status quo bias. These voters wanted fundamental change to America’s economic model or its ruling class.

While we are a long way from another party-reshaping presidential election, I would like to propose that there is another crossover voter type who is waiting to make noise: the Hillary-DeSantis voter.

Somehow it doesn’t have the same ring to it. Were they really Hillary Clinton voters at heart or just AnybodyButTrumpers?

Maybe Biden-DeSantis voters might describe them better. But if Biden and DeSantis are on the ballot net year who will they choose?

I don't do pay walls, so I could not read the complete article.

That said, one of the reasons that I support RDS (and Pompeo in second place) is that they have made far fewer enemies and appeal to a broader spectrum of voter.

It's worthwhile recalling that there are 8 years of new voters from 2016, and that many older voters from the time have "gone west".

Dem ads will attempt to frighten new and low info voters , and if the GOP nom is Trump, they will be easy to scare (impeached, charged w crimes, "porno star", lots of material for the ad writers. No, it's neither fair nor accurate, it is what it is, however, and quite effective.) One reason that we had Trump for 4 is that voters were (justifiably) frightened of Hillary.

Trump also fights the telegenic reality of someone his age, weight, and even hairstyle. (Again, not saying this is fair, however this is presidential politics for this millennium.)

Nobody knows how people voted and why.

Polls are for fools.

Exit polls are for morons.

Wow, RINOs will do anything to destroy DeSantis. Maybe he’s better than I thought.

You support Ron Derangement Syndrome to get DeSantis out of the way?

The genuine one like that was trend of the Reagan Democrats.
Big origin was in my county where I grew up, Macomb County, Michigan. Political analyst Michael Barone also grew up there.
These were the level headed, hard working pro-USA people with an American flag in front of their home and a Bible on the dining room table inside, who had to break away from the pansy anti-American Dems. An exciting trend. The later anti-ACLU George H.W. Bush voters came from that stock. Once voted for JFK and much later for Trump.

Hillary-DeSantis sounds like some drag queen sex changing weirdo group. Clashing and probably a true paradox destroying itself through entropy.

Ha ha, my good FRiend, I do love a quip.

That said, I want no one "out of the way".

The nomination is owed to no candidate, and I support healthy debates, cogent speeches, and saving rhetorical venom for Dems, and for us GOP voters to select our nom, not other candidates or pols.

I predict that the GOP debates, featuring RDS and Trump will be among the most-watched, ever. Should be informative and history-making, agreed?

So is it better to vote for a prez whose record is to hand our freedoms to Fauci n birx. To ensure his tyranny is perpetual, he gave them mail in ballots and a bumpstock ban.
Trump shares more progressive records with hillary than any other republican running.

Third Party-DeSantis voters would be more like it.

These people were who Biden’s campaign heavily focused on to make them comfortable with voting for “Good Ol’ Joe” vs. voting third party. No competing message from the Trump campaign, and it paid off big for Biden - he got many of those voters, and Trump lost states he won before - even while getting not only more raw votes, but also a larger percentage of the overall vote in the state - but fewer people voted third party, and most of them went to Biden, as they did not dislike him like they did Hillary. The Biden campaign completely demolished Trump’s campaign in “the Living Room Campaign” and knew just where to target them with those subchannels.
