The Civil War was fought for State Rights vs. Federal Rights, same as today. Southern States wanted to retain their right to self determination in their laws and slavery happen to be one that they disagreed with the Union. There were many more.
“The War of Northern Aggression” is what I has taught in my 8th grades history class.
Some time ago (years) there was a debate here on FR about the cause of the civil war. I believe someone posted the secession letters from every state & virtually every one listed slavery as the primary reason why they were seceding. States Rights might cover a lot, but slavery was the issue they had most on their minds.
