Thirteen people were arrested for allegedly stealing millions of dollars from low-income Southern California residents.
The suspects stole funds using card skimmers and ATMs to drain electronic benefit transfer (EBT) accounts, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
EBT cards allow participants to pay for food using Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, formerly known as food stamps.
On April 25, authorities received a community tip about fraud and identity theft suspects residing at a Van Nuys motel on the 4700 block of Sepulveda Boulevard.
With a search warrant, police recovered skimming devices, card readers, a large number of false identification cards and documents and $36,062 in cash.
Investigators believe the suspects may be part of a Romanian syndicate known to “target persons experiencing economic hardship for their EBT cards.”

It’s usually wrong to jump to conclusions, but I’m going to do it anyway.
Very often, when the media says “Romanian” they really mean “gypsy”.
Thinking of that song sung by Cher about “travelers”.

Of course I’m against what the Romanians did…they should serve long prison times. Also of course I know it’s a necessary system for those who fall on temporarily hard time…blah blah blah now I’ve got the politically correct part out of the way.
Yet the system is also so abused as I’ve griped about before. Case in point I’m fixing up a 2018 Explorer to sell. This is close to a $50,000 car new. I can’t afford one….
Guess what I found in the back? Multiple grocery store receipts and all paid by by EBT card. The car was FILTHY with candy and soda stains. So here we had a woman driving a fancy car, feeding her brats constant candy and soda basically living high on the hog. Yet the entire while using tax money meant to keep people from starving to death.

My lovely wife and I go to WMT/SAMS(against my will) and we live in a very economically depressed area AKA the welfare utopia of the entire USA, and the parking lots are FULL of fancy SUV’s and cars. Shoppers come out with carts loaded down...I saw a woman checkout recently with over 1k bill. WHERE the heck is the money coming from? Taxpayers...

My brain power and way of thinking is to work and earn. I don’t think about how to cheat the system, but that appears to me to be the leading thoughts these days. Maybe I(we) should start thinking how to cheat the system. What the hell are they going to do with a 70 something severely disabled goy? It’ll be cheaper to leave me alone.

Watching OP live the other night, I commented to my wife that I note that most of those cited for either not having driving licenses or drug crimes with no visible support means are driving cars much newer than anything we have in our garage.
