Nordstrom is the latest retailer to depart downtown San Francisco, announcing plans to close both of its stores in the coming months, a spokesperson for the company told SFGATE Tuesday morning.
The 40,000-square-foot Nordstrom Rack on 901 Market St. is set to shutter July 1, while the 312,000-square-foot Nordstrom at Westfield San Francisco Centre, one of the mall’s flagship stores, will follow suit and close for good by the end of August, the spokesperson said.
“Decisions like this are never easy, and this one has been especially difficult,” read a statement from Chief Stores Officer Jamie Nordstrom. “We’ve spent more than 35 years serving customers in downtown San Francisco, building relationships with them and investing in the local community. But as many of you know, the dynamics of the downtown San Francisco market have changed dramatically over the past several years, impacting customer foot traffic to our stores and our ability to operate successfully.”
The company did not immediately reply to SFGATE’s request for more information about why the stores are closing. A spokesperson for Westfield told SFGATE the closure of Nordstrom “underscores the deteriorating situation in downtown San Francisco.”
"A growing number of retailers and businesses are leaving the area due to the unsafe conditions for customers, retailers, and employees, coupled with the fact that these significant issues are preventing an economic recovery of the area," the statement from Westfield and its owner, Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield, continued. "URW has actively engaged with City leaders for many years to express our serious concerns, which are shared by our customers and retailers. We have urged the City to find solutions to the key issues and lack of enforcement against rampant criminal activity..."

Yes, it’s a mystery.
How long before the leftist officials wake up and realize they are destroying these cities?
When a store closes, the city/state loses jobs and taxes.
One store closing might have little impact. When a dozen major stores close, that does have significant impact.
Crime wins and SF loses yet the dumb-asses still vote for MARXIST Democrat politicians.
Last one out please turn off the lights.
As someone who lives in San Francisco, it’s fascinating to watch the train-wreck that is downtown in its current death spiral. One by one, dominoes are falling, as retailers pull out, projects are cancelled, large corporate employers move (or are shut down, e.g., First Republic).
For years people asked me, “How does the city seemingly survive/thrive despite its insane leftist politics?” And my answer was always the same, two largely external forces were essentially propping things up: (1) tourism; and (2) big tech. Both of these are wobbling. The tourists are still coming to some extent, but the big convention business has moved elsewhere (Vegas, primarily). Though there are/were a large number of tech startups and handful of giant tech companies (e.g., Salesforce, Twitter, Uber, Google & Facebook) with S.F. employees, it’s actually S.F. role as the bedroom community and entertainment capital of a region fueled by Apple/Google/Facebook/Netflix wealth. And now Google and Facebook are cutting back.

Uh oh! Turning SF into a “high end clothing desert”. Oh, the humanity!
They might as well close before Biden has them blown up.
Is it safe to ride the trolleys any more?
Didn’t Nordstrom start in SF? The store was awesome flagship site when I visited SF in the nineties. It suck’s sickly a fine establishment is not in use.
How much money has Nordstroms donated to Democrat politicians over the years?
Mr. Nordstrom, have you been to Downtown San Fran lately? Most of the foot traffic are either homeless bums or shoplifters, both of which you don't target with your merchandise.
Great post. Thanks for sharing. It was on my list to visit decades ago… now it’s not. There are too many more beautiful places that are safe to walk through after dark.
Didn’t Nordstrom start in SF? No, I believe they started in another Hellhole, Seattle.
It doesn't make sense to place a decent store in a democrat hellhole... Instead have what they want - - a few hundred liquor stores with big ugly fences and gates ... and bars on all the windows.
That downtown store was quite the experience back in the day. I shopped there in the early 90’s when on a trip to SF. It was beautiful and memorable.
Such a shame what is happening - but so obvious that it would to those of us with half a brain.
Nordstrom went all TDS years ago
Won’t miss them one bit
