Should Hemingway be re-edited for antisemitism?

Ian Fleming (James Bond) is among the writers undergoing posthumous editing for content unsuitable for today’s readers.

As he is dead, he has no choice in the matter.

We are all familiar with book banning and book burning. Can anything be worse? Yes, changing a writer’s intent, dead or alive, through sensitivity editing.

Some writers, nowadays, agree to go along to get along.

That’s too bad.

True writers value each word they write.

Hemingway spoke of the search for the “perfect sentence,” and quite often he clicked, if he can be forgiven for his mistreatment of Robert Cohn in “The Sun Also Rises.”

Often enough, a single word makes all the difference. There was consternation over Rhett Butler’s exit line in “Gone with the Wind.”

In the end, “Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn,” was kept as written, over “give a darn,” which had been offered to please the censors.

Imagine our cultural and literary loss had Margaret Mitchell or the producers relented for the sake of placating the guardians of “good taste.”

The effect would have been bloody murder in terms of our Literature.

A single word, kept true, and it’s a different world…a world we truly live in, warts and all.

be real...it’s very clever...makes the unedited editions MUCH more valuable.

Yes, not after copyright expires.

Btw it’s 70 years.

Most Hemingway books have not expired yet (95 years after publication).

Sun Also Rises has.

“Ian Fleming (James Bond) is among the writers undergoing posthumous editing for content unsuitable for today’s readers.”

Any movie which has been "edited" should have a tiger waring saying: "What you are about to see has been edited to conform to State approved themes."

"It's to protect you from adult content that may cause you to experience independent thought which might make you a threat to the State."

I could only imagine what they would do to Joyce’s Ulysses. It was banned in the USA and UK for a while as obscene but one publisher in Paris ran the first 1000 copies and it became known as one of the greatest literary pieces ever written.

Since they can’t ban the book, if they removed all the offensive scenes they can reprint it as a leaflet.

There are probably over a million copies of the original The Sun Also Rises in libraries and private ownership - all editions. What is the point of publishing a different version at this point 100 years later?

Hemingway is timeless.

Hemingway was a good friend of my great grandfather who owned a small Ford dealership in Hortons Bay, in northern Michigan.

On Hemingway's many trips to northern Michigan, he would stop at my great grandfather's dealership and sit on the porch and talk cars........

As a side story, my uncle Don, following his discharge from the Army Air Corps in the 1950's, ran a charter boat in Cuba and he ran into Hemingway in one of the bars. Topic turned to Michigan and Hemingway's connections to the north, it was revealed that he was a friend of my uncle's grandfather.......

I have to ask; isn’t changing an author’s book called an Abridged version?

I usually read unabridged literature however, when I was young I read a lot of Readers Digest condensed versions and Cliff Notes just to get through the volume of literature that was required reading along with all the other homework in my take home bag.

A pretty boring leaflet, I’d say, and they’d have to ban all the doctoral dissertations written on the banned passages.

Iconic line from ‘Jaws’ ; “gonna need a bigger boat” (indicating a largely unanticipated enormity of some task at hand).

Iconic device in ‘1984’: the “memory hole”, where inconvenient facts were removed in an after-the-fact form of censorship.

So in less-convoluted terms, as regards the posted article, there’s going to be a lot more of this crap coming down the pike, and that ain’t good.

Patton was a horrid antisemite, too.

I heard he was Jewish.

“BTW it is not a medical impossibility for a woman in a coma to get pregnant and give birth. It has happened. Of course you have to consider that she would have been dead long before for lack of food. That is the medical impossibility. :)”

That’s what I was referring to. One baby is impossible. Two is utterly nuts. What, did Prince Cosby have her hooked up to an IV?

Been done, which is where we get the term Bowdler-ize, after the prude who did it in stage productions.

You make good points.

Sun Also Rises is public domain now. Anyone can get it for free online.

I guess the only people who will buy it are those who want the pc version.

“Or Fahrenheit 451.”

I recently read a trade paperback copy of F451 with an extensive afterward by Ray Bradbury.

He talked about his fights with colleges who wanted to do plays based on it — and schools who wanted to rewrite it — to include different races or women or whatever the revision-of-the-day was. He tried to explain to them that what they were doing was just exactly what the “Firemen” were doing in the book — and how they were trying to do was exactly what the book opposed.

He said it was like talking to brick walls.

The works of two of my favorite modern authors, George MacDonald Fraser and Dan Jenkins, are probably in peril here.

Fraser and Jenkins were rabidly anti-PC and that is clear in their works. And may they remain untouched and unadulterated.

It’s probably a conspiracy. The publisher knows that the librarians will toss their existing copies and buy the new ones as replacement.

I’m only half joking...

Universities and public “education” are now morally and intellectually bankrupt, by and large, not to mention evil when it comes to the tranny business and children.

So let’s ban the Rocky Horror Picture Show;D

just to watch them scream.
