Treasury Says There Is Only $88 Billion Left to Avoid a Debt Cap

This isn’t complicated. The government is acting like someone who has a six-figure salary, but spends money like water and as a result runs their credit cards up to their limits. Then when they start having trouble paying their bills, instead of cutting unnecessary expenses they just expect the credit card companies to raise their credit limit. This person doesn’t have a revenue problem, they have a spending problem. And refusing to extend more credit to them isn’t “reckless”, it’s the most responsible thing that can be done because it forces them to go back and reevaluate their spending. No matter how many times this person wails and cries to the card companies that if they don’t allow him to run up more debt, then he’ll be out in the street, that isn’t remotely true. He has plenty of income each month to cover his necessary expenses, he just has to cut back on all of the frivolous or unnecessary ones.

The federal government has around $400 billion in revenue each month, more than enough to cover servicing the debt, social security and Medicare, and the military. Beyond those things, they will need to make choices, as they should have been forced to make long ago before the spending got totally out of control. If denied more “credit”, the dems in charge will of course try to shut down functions that ARE essential, and which cause pain to people, in order to deceive them into believing that we can never cap federal debt or “see what happens?” The Republicans need to respond by making the truth of government revenue vs. spending crystal clear, and also make it clear that the dems are intentionally playing games with peoples’ lives in order to manipulate them. Republicans are always terrible at communicating, but they need to get on the ball this time and stick to their guns on the debt ceiling as well.

Isn’t spending 1 trillion more than you take in, default?

It would quickly lead to default for anyone who can’t print their own money. Unfortunately, the fed CAN print money, so they just make everyone they owe take the hit in the form of inflated dollars. However, no matter what the government does about the debt ceiling, the creditors are starting to take notice of their profligate ways and are moving away from buying fedgov debt. They’re smart enough to not want to be paid back with worthless inflated dollars, which only gets worse if the ceiling is lifted. So the dems can bluff all they want about the “full faith and credit”, but the people who matter are just waving their hand and walking away. They’re not buying it, literally.

When it reaches the debt ceiling they will have some budget cut choices to make. Just like the rest of us at the end of the month. It doesn’t mean default.

But we all know the debt ceiling will be raised at the last minute. The only shock would be if they didn’t.
