Drug Shortages Approach an All-Time High, Leading to Rationing
The New York Times via Yahoo ^ | May 17, 2023 | By Christina Jewett

Thousands of patients are facing delays in getting treatments for cancer and other life-threatening diseases, with drug shortages in the United States approaching record levels.

Hospitals are scouring shelves for supplies of a drug that reverses lead poisoning and for a sterile fluid needed to stop the heart for bypass surgery. Some antibiotics are still scarce following the winter flu season when doctors and patients frantically chased medicines for ailments like strep throat. Even children’s Tylenol was hard to find.

Hundreds of drugs are on the list of medications in short supply in the United States, as officials grapple with an opaque and sometimes interrupted supply chain, quality and financial issues that are leading to manufacturing shutdowns.

The shortages are so acute that they are commanding the attention of the White House and Congress, which are examining the underlying causes of the faltering generic drug market, which accounts for about 90% of domestic prescriptions.

The Biden administration has assembled a team to find long-term solutions for shoring up the pharmaceutical supply chain, at a time when the United States remains heavily reliant on medicines and drug ingredients from India and China. And in recent weeks, generic drugmakers, supply-chain experts and patient advocates have appeared before lawmakers to discuss the problems.

The scarcity of generic forms of chemotherapy to treat lung, breast, bladder and ovarian cancers has only heightened concerns.

Just about the only drug without a shortage is Fentanyl.

Unsurprisingly, that is also from China.

I’m on two heretofore very common blood-pressure medications. For about the last six months, every time I put in for a refill, I have to wait a 2-3 weeks for them to get them back in stock, and even then, I often only get about half the amount that is prescribed.

80% of all our drugs are made in India and China and there aren’t any shortages over there. I buy some of my drugs in India as they are much cheaper.

Example, I have to go to a newer diabetes drug, here my monthly co-pay would be about $100 a month, $1200 a year. In India I can buy a year’s supply, same drug and manufacturer for about $300, no insurance or doctor’s prescription needed.

Most people will go to the trouble to source out new places, just continue to get raped by Big Pharma here. The prices in India are even better than Canada. The key os planning ahead on your supply needs.

During the Covid scare and there was no way to get Ivermectin or HCQ, I got all I wanted from India along with Budesonide Inhalers, $300 a pop here. I was totally prepared for any family or close friends who might need help. The amount of money I spent was almost nothing for the Peace of Mind I had knowing I was prepared.

No standardized tests to get into universities. People arrive at a 7th grade level. Everybody gets a degree. Now the accrediting boards are being dumbed down so anybody can be a doctor, a lawyer or an engineer.

When I graduated from engineering school 50 years ago, we joked “Four years ago I couldn’t spel ‘enjineer’” now I are one.” Little did we know it would come true.

All roads lead to China for the base compounds for 90% of our medicines and vitamin supplements.

A designed event. Read the Oxycontin settlement carefully. In the settlement, many drugs were defined and production was to be diminished to near zero. That’s your government doing crap behind your back, then claiming they know nothing about it.

“China Rx: Exposing the Risks of America’s Dependence on China for Medicine”

“Millions of Americans are taking prescription drugs made in China and don’t know it—and pharmaceutical companies are not eager to tell them. This is a disturbing, well-researched wake-up call for improving the current system of drug supply and manufacturing.

Several decades ago, penicillin, vitamin C, and many other prescription and over-the-counter products were manufactured in the United States. But with the rise of globalization, antibiotics, antidepressants, birth control pills, blood pressure medicines, cancer drugs, among many others are made in China and sold in the United States. China’s biggest impact on the US drug supply is making essential ingredients for thousands of medicines found in American homes and used in hospital intensive care units and operating rooms.

The authors convincingly argue that there are at least two major problems with this scenario. First, it is inherently risky for the United States to become dependent on any one country as a source for vital medicines, especially given the uncertainties of geopolitics. For example, if an altercation in the South China Sea causes military personnel to be wounded, doctors may rely upon medicines with essential ingredients made by the adversary.

Second, lapses in safety standards and quality control in Chinese manufacturing are a risk. Citing the concerns of FDA officials and insiders within the pharmaceutical industry, the authors document incidents of illness and death caused by contaminated medications that prompted reform. This probing book examines the implications of our reliance on China on the quality and availability of vital medicines.

A lot of these pharms require nasty chemicals to make, we can’t build those plants to make those chemicals here because it may inconvenience a fuzzy bunny somewhere, so they are made in a place which doesn’t worry about those things.
