The event from the striking union's Trans/Gender Non-Conforming Writers Subcommittee sought to improve visibility for these members both within the industry and the union.
Picketing at Netflix on Thursday took a celebratory turn as trans and gender non-conforming writers hosted a block party-esque picket at the corner of Sunset Blvd. and Van Ness Ave. aimed at improving their visibility both within the industry at large and in their own guild.
The event from the Writers Guild of America’s Trans/Gender Non-Conforming Writers Subcommittee, called “Trans Takeover Thursday,” featured a “mini ball,” honoring the ballroom tradition originating in queer communities of color (prizes were awarded for “cutest pet,” “best outfit” and “best sign”). Attendees were encouraged to wear blue, pink and white, referring to the traditional colors of the transgender Pride flag. Writers packed the sidewalks surrounding Netflix’s Hollywood offices, with hundreds attending (the Writers Guild estimated 800 appeared). Picket signs with messages like “We’re here, we’re queer and we can do this all year” and “They/them causing mayhem” were hoisted into the air.
It was all in the service of showing “that there are so many of us,” says writer Kam Alyse (Walker), one of the organizers of the event. A key goal of the subcommittee, which only formed officially within the last year at the union, is advocating for more trans stories told by trans writers. “We want to remind people that not only are we out here and we’re supporting our union, but hopefully our union will also be supporting us,” they said.
Trans representation is still generally paltry in entertainment, notes writer and actor Jen Richards (Mayfair Witches, Mrs. Fletcher). “And when it has been there, it’s been non-trans people playing us in shows written by non-trans people and in movies written and directed by non-trans people. ”

I have a modest proposal. Offer these writers a deal to produce a script for a movie in return for royalties based on subsequent viewership. If the movie loses money they are fired without pay.

How? Most of the WGA writers active today can’t actually write themselves out of a wet paper bag and their series almost universally tank.
I think this is a VERY bad time for TV/movie writers to be going on strike. TV just brings out more reality shows and event shows that don’t require writers.
Besides that, AI is getting to the point where it will be able to rewrite old scripts from classics with a new set of characters as well as the hacks can.
When the band musicians went on strike in 1942, crooners took over and the Big Band era’s completion was hastened. It was as disastrous strike as anything this side of the Air Traffic Controllers.

I saw a pretty good Spanish-Italian zombie movie today, Let Sleeping Corpses Lie (1974). Yesterday I saw a British black comedy, The Killing of Sister George (1968). Both for the first time. Both on YouTube.
The day before that, 1980's Stardust Memories on Tubi. It's been decades since I last saw that one.

I was one of Netflix’s FIRST customers, waaaay back in 1998. Finally, 23 years after I joined, I had enough with their woke nonsense and quit the service. They’ve asked me to rejoin, and I’ve repeatedly sent them the reasons for quitting. They’ve never responded, other than more requests to rejoin.

Devout Christian white male? The "surprise twist" will be that he's a wife-beater, or child molester, or rapist.
Young black male? A sexually monogamous, brilliant scholar, who'll be falsely accused of a crime.
Young black woman? Another brilliant student who's putting herself through college, despite racist remarks. She'll be raped by a frat gang of rich young white men.
Single mother? A strong, independent woman whose white husband abused and abandoned her. She's also a fiercely devoted mother, despite the hate and judgment she gets from traditional (white, racist) housewives.
Gay or tranny? A fountain of wisdom, tolerance, and true spirituality throughout the show.
I recently shopped at a Vons (a chain supermarket in L.A.). One checkout line had two tranny flags by the cashier. But the blue, white, and pink stripes also had some black and brown stripes (a new addition since the Summer of Floyd).
It looked something like this "BLM trans flag," but with more tranny stripes than BLM stripes.
