I don’t think so. He plays the same character in every movie he is in.
So did John Wayne - except at the end of his career. But people loved him in the movies. Most actors do the same, with the exception of a very few. The difference is that Wayne was, despite his many personal flaws (which we all have), a lover of his nation and its people - the very opposite of DeNiro. He also chose the roles he played carefully, wanting to portray “good guys.” DeNiro not only has the knack to play “bad guys” - though not always, e.g., A Bronx Tale - he chooses such roles. Why? Perhaps he, like the late Lowell Weicker (R), Connecticut, relishes being “the turd in the punchbowl.”
